Vayetze – Don’t judge a book…
Bereishis 30:14: “and Reuven went out in the days of the harvest and found madrakes in the field.”
Rashi: This is to tell you the praises of the tribes, that they were honest and only took that which was ownerless.
It once happened that a student of Mirrer Yeshiva came to Rav Elchonon Wasserman to buy one of his seforim. Rav Elchonon took the sefer and gave it to the young man. The bachur asked him how much it costs.
“I do not want to receive any money form a ben Torah!” answered Rav Elchonon.
“But I have the means to pay for the sefer!” said the bachur.
“In that case please give me back the sefer.” said Rav Elchonon
“If you would accept it as a gift I am not obligated to check to see if there are mistakes. However if you wish to purchase it, I am obligated to check it, because if there is a mistake then I would be guilty of theft.”
Rav Elchonon took the sefer and proceeded to examine the pages carefully until he finished the book and was satisfied that there were no mistakes, and only then did he return the book to its owner.
Shabbat Shalom, R’ Moshe Cohen
