 Yisro – Kiddush HaShem

Shemos 19:12 “Whoever touches the mountain will die.”

If a mountain upon which Torah was given became holy, how much more is a

Torah scholar who learns Torah holy.

Before the Second World War, Rav Ungar was the Rabbi in a in a small city called

Kopvor. A small number of families, due to ignorance, owned stores that they

kept open on Shabbos. However one owner was openly hostile to the religious

Jews in the city. His store was in the middle of the town, and every Shabbos he

would stand outside as the Jews were returning frm shul, smoking a cigarette and disdainfully wishing the Jews “ A Gutte Shabbos.”

Once on the first day of Pesach he saw the Rav from a distance and called out:

Ungar! Come over here!”

The Rav approached with his young son. The man beckoned him into his store.

The Rav entered. The man took out bread from his drawer and began to eat it.

Suddenly he had a stroke and fell to the floor and died.

On Chol HaMoed his burial took place and the Rav attended. His son asked him

why he went and he replied:

“Since such a great Kiddush HaShem happened through this man he must have

had some merit. Indeed after this incident the remaining families closed their stores

on Shabbos!

Advanced Halachic Bulletin

Kaddish after Kr’ias HaTorah is not a mourners Kaddish.

Rashbatz held that mourners have the right to say this Kaddish. A mourner can do so even if he neither is the Ba’al Korei nor received the last Aliyah.

Rav Shlomo Zalman z”l held that the Kaddish after Kri’as Hatorah belongs to the Ba’al Korei. In practice, different congregations have different customs in this regard, and many have no set policy on the matter.  Since Kaddish is designed to rectify Chilul HaShem, it is tragically counter-productive to fight over it and create further Chilul HaShem.

Have a great Shabbos!!
