Seder – A Disorderly Seder

R Shmuel Koriver, a student of the Chozeh of Lublin, lived in abject poverty. Pesach was rapidly approaching, and he had no money for wine, food, or matzos. The Chozeh heard of his plight and dispatched one of his wealthy chasidim to quietly provide Reb Shmuel with all his needs. On Erev Pesach, a wagon laden with food and wine and matzos arrived at Reb Shmuel's door. He was overjoyed.  Reb Shmuel sat down and conducted his Seder with a joy and a feeling that was unparalleled in all his holy life.  He was overjoyed that HaShem had provided for him without having to ask for charity. On the second night of the Seder, Reb Shmuel was so tired from the previous night that he decided to rest a little before beginning the second Seder. He lay down on his bed for just a couple of minutes.  Several hours later, he awoke with a start. He glanced at the clock and was horrified to see that it was nearly midnight. In just a short while it would be time to eat the afikomen. Reb Shmuel rushed to make kiddush, read the haggadah, say Hallel, drink the four cups, eat the matzos, the bitter herbs, the charoses, and the festive meal, and finally just seconds before midnight, he ate the afikomen. After Pesach, Reb Shmuel traveled to visit his teacher, the Chozeh, to tell him how disappointed he was with his second Seder.

“Well the first night was disappointing,” commented the Chozeh, “but you made up for it with the second Seder!!”

If you think your Seder was not a success, don’t despair!

Have a kosher and joyous Pesach.

Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Moshe Cohen

Dear Community,

We are initiating an AMEN Campaign for the merit of the refuah shleima of Raphael Aryeh ben Batsheva.  One of the ways that we can all help him during this hectic Pesach z'man is that adults and children alike can focus on making brachos with kavanah and having others answer AMEN, having in mind the speedy recovery of Raphael Aryeh ben Batsheva.

Pesach - Cutting corners

One year, R' Velvel Brisker (1887-1959) and his brother, R' Moshe, went to Warsaw to bake Matzos for their father R' Chaim.  Unfortunately, on the journey home, every single Matza broke. When Erev Pesach came, R' Chaim instructed his sons to try and piece together each Matza, so that at least there would be an appearance of having whole Matzos.  Painstakingly, the brothers went to work.  They were joined in this laborious work by a third person, who, much to their surprise, pieced together seven Matzos for every three of theirs.

“How was that possible?”  they asked him in wonderment.

The man explained that rather than looking for perfect matches, he simply broke off corners wherever necessary and put the remaining pieces together!

R' Velvel turned to his brother and commented:

“This is also true in answering Halachic questions. There are two ways - the right way, which is to carefully and meticulously put together all of the necessary pieces, and the wrong way, which is to twist and turn things and to cut corners until everything appears to fit!!

Have a kosher Pesach!!

Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Moshe Cohen
