Shemos – Goral HaGra

“Shemos 4:27 “Vayomer HaShem el Aharon Lech Likras Moshe Hamidboro”

And HaShem said to Aharon: “Go to the desert and meet Moshe”

Rav Aharon Kotlar z”l and Rav Moshe Feinstein z”l learned together in Slutz. After Rav Moshe became the Rabbi in Lubin, he and his family were persecuted for years by the Communists. Eventually he and his family emigrated to the United States. Rav Aharon stayed in Europe until the outbreak of World War 2. Then through the mercy of Hashem he escaped the Holocaust and made it across Russia to Japan

In Japan he was faced with two choices: either to go to Eretz Yisroel and join his father-in-law Rav Isser Zalman Meltzer or to go to America and try to build Torah from the remnant of European Jewry. America, at the time, was a spiritual wasteland for Judaism.

Rav Aharon decided that he would follow the “goral haGra” – a type of lottery – to determine what he should do. The lottery fell on the pasuk:

“Shemos 4:27 “Vayomer Hashem el Aharon lech likras Moshe hamidboro”

And Hashem said to Aharon: “Go to the desert and meet Moshe”

He moved to America and started Lakewood Yeshiva which is the largest Torah institution in America today.

Shabbat Shalom, R’ Moshe Cohen

JEWISH LAW TIP

Mishne Brura held that you should stand for Havdalah even though you are being Motzei others.

Vayechi – The Real Blessing in Life

Breishis 48:20 “..Vayevorachem Bayom Hahu”

“…and he blessed them on that day”

Reb Yisroel Salant, the 19th century father of the Mussar movement, was once in Paris for some business.

It was an exceptionally hot day and Reb Yisroel sat down at a cafe and ordered a glass of water.  It was a very elegant café in a very expensive district of Paris.  The water was brought by a waiter on a silver tray and in a beautiful glass.  When he finished drinking he was charged a franc.  He paid the franc and left.

Later when he spoke about the incident he added:

“For a glass of water that is worth no more than a prutah  why did I have to pay a franc?  However, the owner of the café was correct to charge the inflated price.  His café was in an expensive part of town.  It was beautifully designed and decorated.  It was surrounded by a well tended garden.  Elegantly dressed waiters brought the water on a silver tray.

“I was not just paying for the water!

“How much more should we have to thank Hashem for everything that He does for us?”

                                                                                                                                    Shabbat Shalom, R’ Moshe Cohen

JEWISH LAW TIP

Mishna Brurah 109:2- If you are davening Shemonah Esrei word by word with the Shliach Tzibor, you  should say Kedusha with him and not with the Tzibor, and you should also say L’dor V’dor Nagid… along with him as well.

Aruch Hashulchan 109:11- If you are davening Shemonah Esrei word by word with the Shliach Tzibur, you may say Birchas Kohanim along with him.

Other Poskim say that it is better to remain silent and listen to the Shliach Tzibor.
