Vayakhel – Communication Skills

Shemos 38:8 “Vaya’as Es Hakior…….B’maros Hatzovos”

“(Moshe) made the laver from the mirrors of the women…”

Rashi: …..the laver was used to bring peace between husband and wife.     The Mishne in Pirkei Avos states that one should avoid excessive frivolous conversation, even with one’s wife. A young man during his week of Sheva Brochos took this Mishne a little too literally, and refrained from speaking unnecessarily with his wife during the week of Sheva Brochos. He would make gestures to try to communicate what he wanted. Needless to say this was extremely frustrating, and so she came to her father and wept bitterly to him.     Her father went to R’ Yehoshua Leib Diskin, who told the father he would take care of the matter personally. He had the young man summoned to his office. The young man timidly knocked on the door of the great Rabbi and an attendant ushered him into the study where R’ Yehoshua sat learning. The Rav momentarily lifted his eyes to see who was coming in, and immediately returned to his learning. A few minutes passed. The young man stood there in a state of confusion. Did the Rav see him? Should he wait until the Rav finished learning? Should he interrupt? Should he leave? Ten long minutes passed which turned to twenty. Finally the Rav called in his Rebbetzin, while seemingly ignoring the young man. She entered and he gently bade her to sit next to him, and proceeded to ask her what she had done that morning. She responded by saying that she had gone to the market. He then asked her what she had bought, and she replied that she had bought squash and potatoes. The Rav then asked her what she was planning to cook for dinner and she informed him what she was cooking. He then thanked her and she left the room. The Rav then motioned to the young man that he should leave too. He got up and left but not before he had learned an important lesson in communication skills!!

Shabbat Shalom, R’ Moshe Cohen

JEWISH LAW TIPS:Purim

Mishne Brure: does not bring that women are obligated.

R. Moshe Feinstein: Women should come to shul to hear the reading

Chazon Ish: Women are exempt.

Mishne Brure: There are those who say that “Zecher” should be read with a Tsere, and there are those who hold that it should be read with a Segol.

Rav Moshe: held that it wasn’t necessary to repeat the entire pasuk but just to repeat the words “Timchey Es Zecher Amalek”. For those who did not hear it being read it may be reread immediately after the Torah reading at Mincha. However the Torah may not be removed for the purpose of reading solely for women. One needs 10 or at least 6 who have not heard the Kriah in order to remove the Torah.

Mishne Brure: One should have the Mitzvah of the total annihilation of Amalek in mind while listening to the reading.

Tsits Eliezar: held that coming to shul to hear the reading is sufficient Kavanah.

Rav Moshe: held that it wasn’t necessary to hear every word, nor does the Bal Koreh have to have a special Kavanah.

Mishne Brure: held that the Bal Koreh has to have in mind to be Yotsei the rest of the Tsibor.

-----Original Message-----

From: Kalman Packouz [mailto:kpackouz@gmail.com]

Subject: Your letter of thanks to Reb Noah ...

To be m'chazaik Reb Noah, Kalman Packouz is working on printing and binding a book with the wonderful comments to the articles from the aish.com:

Healing Rabbi Weinberg ... along with photographs of families touched by Reb Noah.

He was thinking ... if you would like your letter of thanks to Reb Noah and how he touched your life and your family, then he would put all of the Aish letters at the beginning of the book followed by the comments.

Therefore, if you'd like your letter to Reb Noah included, said it to KALMAN PACKOUZ at kp@aish.com subject: Letter for Reb Noah.

Warmly,

Shabbos – It’s a Lock

Shemos 31:16 “…and the Jewish People will keep the Sabbath…”

Rav Baruch Ber Lebowitz, (1866- 1939) the late Rosh HaYeshiva of Kaminetz was visiting the States before World War II. As he was walking to shul on Shabbos morning, he passed by a store that was owned by a Jew, and noticed that the store was closed and the door was locked and bolted. In those days (and even today!) it was a great test for Jews to keep their stores closed on Shabbos, since most of their business was transacted with gentiles on Saturday.

He walked up to the front door and kissed the large padlock that was on the door. The people who were accompanying him were very surprised and asked him about his strange behavior.

He answered them:  “This is the sign that HaShem is still our Master and that we, the Jewish people, are still His servants! “

Shabbat Shalom, R’ Moshe Cohen
