Lech Lecha – Shiur genius

Bereishis 14: “…vayorek es chanichov…shemona asar veshlosh meyos”

“…318 students…” Rashi: Eliezar

Rav Shlomo Heiman, one of the first Roshei Yeshiva in Torah v’Das, was known for the energy and passion with which he taught his shiurim. When he gave over the shiur, his body would shake and tremble, and perspiration would drip from his face. More than once, Rav Shlomo fainted at the conclusion of his shiur, which he gave with every ounce of his strength.

One stormy and snowy day, only four talmidim arrived at the yeshiva.  In typical fashion, R’ Shlomo gave over the shiur as if hundreds of talmidim were crowded in the room.  When the talmidim saw that he was utilizing all his strength to give over the shiur, they tried to stop him.

“Rebbe, there’s only four of us here.”

R’ Shlomo retorted: “You think that I am only giving over the shiur to the four of you?  You should know that my words are being given over to hundreds of talmidim. You, your future talmidim, and their talmidim after them!”

Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Moshe Cohen

HALACHA OF THE WEEK

Mishna Brura 106:4 held that women should daven Shacharis and Mincha.

Mogen Avrohom held that women need to say only a short tefila once a day.

Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach held that the minhag haolam for women is to daven shachris until midday, even though the time for shachris has passed.

In general, it is preferred to daven Shacharis over Mincha; however, in this case, it is better to skip Shacharis and wait for Mincha rather than daven Shacharis at a questionable time.
