Korach - The damage caused by "machlokes" (argument)

Bamidbar 17:5 "Do not be like Korach and his community"

After the Bolshevik Revolution in 1918 in Russia large segments of the population were displaced and many new families moved to the city of Radin. One such family established a new Chevra Kadisha (burial society ) in the city.  It was not long before the entire town was embroiled in a machlokes. Some families supported the new chevra and some supported the old chevra.

One Shabbos, when feelings had escalated to a fever pitch and people were not talking to each other, the Chofetz Chaim stood up in shul and spoke.

"My friends, if you were to have offered me 2000 rubles to speak today I would not have consented. I am old and weak and every moment is precious to me.  However, I see that there is a great need to say something. I have lived in this town for over 50 years. I remember every person who davened in this shul.  We should all live and be well, however we must remember that ultimately we shall have to leave this world and join our family and friends and give an accounting in the next world. Machlokes is so serious that even if someone has a lot of mitsvos and ma'asim tovim (good deeds) to his credit, he might lose them all because of it. In an attempt to escape the severity of the judgment he may clutch at straws.  He may be tempted to say that there was a pious Jew living in Radin by the name of the Chofetz Chaim who saw what was going on and remained silent. Therefore I want you to know for the record that I disapprove of what is taking place here. The Chofetz Chaim began to cry and stepped down from the bimah.

The new Chevra Kadisha was disbanded and the machlokes ended.

Good Shabbos,

Rabbi Cohen

HALACHIC UPDATE:

The words “boruch hu overooch shemo” are said at the mention of HaShem’s name in every brocho. However if you will miss answering “amen” at the end of the brocho, “boruch hu overooch shemo” should be omitted.

The words “boruch hu overooch shemo” are not said at the mention of HaShem’s to a brocho that is being made for you e.g. kiddush

If the words “boruch hu overooch shemo” were said it by mistake to a brocho that is being made for you, provided you had in mind that you were being yotzei, you do not need to hear the brocho again.

Shlach – Talis tales

Bamidbar 15:38 “and they will make for themselves tzitsis…”

R’ Dovid HaLevi was the author of the commentary on the Shulchan Aruch known as the Taz – Turei Zahav. He was also the Av Beis Din in the city of Levov.  The women of the city noticed that his talis had worn thin and they wandted to get him a new one. They purchased a beautiful and dignified talis for their Rav and brought it to him. Imagine how surprised they were when he politely declined. They asked him for an explanation, as it was clear that his own talis had seen better days.

He replied:“There is a custom that a person is buried in his talis when he passes away. I am confident that when I get to beis din shel malah (the heavenly court) that it will be able to testify for me that I have never had an improper thought in my shemone esrei!”

Good Shabbos,

Rabbi Cohen

Advanced Halachic Bulletin

Shulchan Aruch 308:39 regards animals as muktzah which has no permissible Shabbos use and may not be moved for any reason. No distinction is drawn between farm animals and households pets.                                                                                                  However, there are other poskim who do distinguish between farm animals and household pets. In their opinion, a pet is considered a household item, similar to a toy or a picture, and is not classified as muktzah at all.                                                                    While it is advisable to follow the majority opinion and not carry or move pets on Shabbos, those who are lenient have a halachic authority upon whom to rely.

All opinions agree that it is permitted to touch (without moving) or feed one's pets on Shabbos. It is also permitted to hold onto a leash and walk a dog in an area which is enclosed by an eiruv. It is permitted to place a leash on a dog on Shabbos.

Behaloscha – To forgive is Divine

Bamidbar 12:3 "And the man Moshe was the most humble person..."

Rav Moshe Feinstein once presided over a Din Torah in which he ruled that one party was obligated to return a sum of money to the other party.  However the aggrieved party refused to abide by the psak. When Rav Moshe asked him the reason for his refusal, the man brazenly answered:

“I’m not giving over the money because the psak is not valid!  There’s a clear halacha which was overlooked - that money matters are not judged at night.”

Rav Moshe calmly explained to the man that his psak had not been mistaken, and he was obligated to give over the money.

Five months after this incident, this man returned to Rav Moshe and requested a certificate stating that he is a qualified shochet.  Without a moment’s hesitation, Rav Moshe  picked up his pen  and wrote the letter.  Those present in the room remembered very clearly how disrespectfully this man had treated Rav Moshe.  They were sure that he was not worthy of now being helped by Rav Moshe.  One of them said:                                                                                                     “The Rosh Yeshivah surely remembers the insulting behavior of this man.”

Rav Moshe answered, “How is that relevant?  Yom Kippur has already passed, and I davened tefillas Zaka, saying that I forgive anyone who had sinned against me.  These were not mere words. In addition, the man has surely done teshuva since then.”

Good Shabbos,

Rabbi Cohen
