Naso - Shlom Bayis

Rav Yaakov Kamenetsky Zt"l was in the middle of a conversation at a wedding when he realized that his wife was trying to catch his attention. Rav Yaakov quickly approached his wife and asked:

"Is there something that the Rebbetzin needs from me?".

"I simply wanted to know when the Rav wants to leave", she responded.

"Whenever the Rebbetzin wishes to go", he quickly responded.

"I'd like to go whenever the Rav wants to leave", she answered.

"Well, the Gemara states that 'heavenly matters' are decided by the husband and 'worldly matters' by the wife. It seems to me that this is a 'worldly matter”, Rav Yaakov replied.

"But for me, listening to the Rav is a 'heavenly matter”, his wife countered.

"Well in that case, my 'heavenly matter' decision is that we should go whenever you wish!", Rav Yaakov persisted.

"In that case, I'd like to remain another thirty minutes", concluded his wife.

Rav Yaakov smiled and said:  "Good! So we shall remain another thirty minutes".

HALACHIC BULLETIN

R’ Moshe Feinstein was of the opinion that people today are accustomed to be lenient in the playing of games on Shabbos that involve profit and loss e.g. Monopoly or card games.

However those who choose to be stringent deserve a blessing.

Have a great Shabbos!

The Fire of Torah  – Shavous

R’ Chaim Volozin, the main disciple of Vilna Gaon, had an idea to begin a Yeshiva in Volozhin. He first went to his teacher, the great Vilna Gaon to consult and hoped that his Rebbe would immediately give his blessing. However after listening patiently, the Gaon did not respond. R’ Chaim left the home of the Gra bitterly disappointed at the Gra’s apparent disapproval of the project. He remained inconsolable for about a year, at which point he decided to return to the Gra and once again make his presentation.

This time when the Gra heard the plans his face visibly shone with enthusiasm and he eagerly  received the idea and became greatly animated.

“But Rebbe I do not understand. When the Rebbe first heard of my plans he apparently reacted unfavorably. Nothing has changed in the interim! What has caused the attitude of the Rebbe to change?”

“You are indeed correct” answered the Gra “The urgency and the importance of the matter has not changed. However when you first came to see me I noticed a passion in your eyes that was uncharacteristic. I was concerned that perhaps the motivation for such an important Mitzvah was questionable. Now that I see you return and calmly present the facts I know that this undertaking will succeed and therefore I give my blessing.
