Va'era   - "You don't say!"

Shemos 6:12 "ve'ani aral sefosayim"

Targum Onkelos translates "aral sefosayim" as "it is heavy for me to speak"

Rav Yakov Koppel Reich from Bodofst was a great orator. His son once found his father deep in thought as he prepared a drosho that he was going to give that evening.

"Is it true that even a great orator like my father needs to prepare so much before he gives his drosho?" He inquired from his father. His father smiled and answered him:

"I am not preparing what I am going to say. I am preparing what I am not going to say!"

Good Shabbos,

Rabbi Cohen

Advanced Halachic Bulletin

Question submitted by Steve Dorfman

Aruch HaShulchan 91:7 states that in times of tzorus, you should daven with your hands clasped together and fingers interlocked. However, in times of tranquility you should not, because it causes you to be judged with din

Piskei Tshuvos 95:5 states that Arizal was careful never to hold his hands in that manner because it is bad mazal.                                                                                                                                              Aruch HaShulchan states that although placing one hand inside the other is the best way to hold your hands when davening, each person is different and should keep his hands the way he feels comfortable, like on a Shtender or holding on to a shelf. However, you should make sure not to daven while wearing gloves.

No Shtick, Just Steak - Shemos

The Bostoner Rebbe was famous for helping Baalei Tshuva stay grounded even as they wished to soar to spiritual heights. It is told that once a Baal Tshuva told the Rebbe that he doesn't eat steak unless he has bread so that he can wash for Hamotzei. He explained that a good juicy steak deserves more than a mere shehakol before eating it and a borei nefashos afterwards. He wanted to make sure that after eating the steak he can amply thank Hashem with a full birchas hamazon.

Expecting the Bostoner Rebbe to be pleased with his logic and piety, he was taken aback by the Rebbe's negative response to this practice. The Rebbe explained that when instituting the brachos, Chazal knew very well the meaning of a nice piece of meat. Despite this they instituted the bracha of shehakol and a borei nefashos. One must trust Chazal and not veer from their words based on one's own personal feelings and preferences.

Good Shabbos,

 Rabbi Cohen

Advanced halachic bulletin

Shulchan Aruch YD 179:1 holds that it is assur to seek the future in stars or in lots. However R' Shternbuch reported that his father-in-law once asked the Chazon Ish if when he is unsure what to do, he could write on two pieces of paper and draw one and follow what it says and the Chazon Ish said that he is permitted to do so. R' Shternbuch thought that the issur in the Shulchan Aruch is if someone is sick and you draw lots to see if he will live or die and then you believe the outcome.  However, when a person is faced with a dilemma what to do and has two equal choices which he cannot decide between, he may draw lots to help him choose a course of action and daven to Hashem that the right outcome will come up in the goral.  In this case it is not assur because the goral is not determining anything in any way.  It is just helping him move forward and breaking his indecision without him trusting or relying on any power other than HaShem.
