Ki Savo – Joy

Devorim 28:47 "On account of the fact that you did not serve HaShem with joy ... (these curses will befall you)

A widow once approached Rav Chaim of Tzanz, known by his great work the “Divrei Chaim” as he was sitting in conference with Rav Sholom from Kaminka. She bemoaned her miserable lot in life. Her husband's untimely demise had left his family bereft of a breadwinner. She and her children were overcome with abject poverty. The final straw was that their landlord was trying to eject them from their home. Her incessant weeping took its toll on Rav Sholom, who broke down and began to cry with her. However the Divrei Chaim declared in a joyful tone:                                                                                                                                "Do not worry. Go home. I am confident things will work out for you."

After she had left, Rav Sholom, asked the Divrei Chaim how he could retain his happy disposition after listening to the widow's tale of woe. He responded:                                                                                                    "To be able to intercede on behalf of another Jew one must be filled with joy. After all, it is difficult to "sell something" that one does not believe in!”

JEWISH LAW TIP

Women have had the custom for centuries to hear Shofar. There is no reason for women not to blow Shofar themselves. The Minhag is to blow 30 Kolos, three of each set. There is a major discussion as to whether Shvarim-T’ruah should be done in one breath or two. In this case they should be done in one breath.

There is a Machlokes whether women can make Brachos on Mitzvos on which they are exempt (Rabbeinu Tam) or not (Rambam). Sephardic women do not make the Bracha. Ashkenazic women may make a Bracha on the  blowing of the Shofar herself. However a man who has already fulfilled his Mitzva should not make the Bracha. A woman should make the Bracha for herself and include others.

Have a wonderful Shabbos!

Timely payment – Ki Setze

Devorim 24:15 “ B’yomo Teeten Secharo” – “He should be paid on the day of his work”.

Plans were complete for the Chofetz Chaim’s trip from Radin to Warsaw. It was the middle of a very harsh winter and the distance was very great. Just as the Chofetz Chaim was about to leave, his coat snagged and tore badly. Immediately a member of the family rushed to the tailor to have it repaired, and it was hastily sewn. Meanwhile the wagon driver waited anxiously to take the Chofetz Chaim to the train station. The snow covered the ground and it was a difficult journey just to make it to the station on time. They arrived at the station moments before the train was due to pull out. Suddenly the Chofetz Chaim exclaimed:

“We must return immediately!”

“Why?” replied the perplexed wagon driver.

“I have not yet paid the tailor for his work.”

“But it has taken us almost an hour to get here and the Rav will miss the train if we return now” responded the driver. “Give me the money and I shall personally deliver it to the tailor.”

However the Chofetz Chaim was adamant that he do the mitzva of paying the tailor himself, so with no other choice the driver headed back to Radin!

No one should serve as Chazan on the High Holidays without the congregation's approval.  A person who sued another Jew in a secular court without authorization from the Rabbinical court, or someone who did not regularly attend synagogue services during the year, may not serve as Chazan during the Yamim Nora'im.

Re’ey  - Charity Begins at Home

R’ Moshe Ravkash, author of the Be'er HaGolah, would weep when he would look at his wife's candlesticks.

During the fury of the Cossack attacks against the Jews in Vilna, R’ Moshe, an extremely wealthy man, buried his money, gold and silver utensils. He fled from community to community until finally he arrived in the city of Amsterdam where there was a thriving Sephardic community. They embraced him warmly and he remained there until the Cossacks were driven back, and it was safe to return home.  Upon his return he located his hidden treasures. However the Jews who had survived, and those who had returned, had been left virtually penniless. R’ Moshe therefore began to disburse all of his money to sustain the Jewish community. His wife, observing that he was selling all of their material possessions, hid her silver candlesticks out of concern for their own financial predicament. When the financial situation seemed to improve, she divulged to her husband that she had hidden their candlesticks. When R’ Moshe saw the candlesticks he sighed heavily:

"How many poor people could have been supported by these candlesticks!"

HALACHIC BULLETIN

There are two schools of thought concerning praying at the graves of Tzadikim.

Shla holds that it is permitted to speak directly to the dead to ask them to daven to HaShem on our behalf.                                                                                                Maharil strongly disagrees and maintains that this too is strictly forbidden. We may daven only directly to HaShem in the merit of the dead He should have mercy on us.                                                                                                                                         All opinions agree that it is strictly forbidden to daven directly to a dead person (or to angel) so that they should help us.
