Ki Savo – Joy

Devorim 28:47 "On account of the fact that you did not serve HaShem with joy ... (these curses will befall you)

A widow once approached Rav Chaim of Tzanz, known by his great work the “Divrei Chaim” as he was sitting in conference with Rav Sholom from Kaminka. She bemoaned her miserable lot in life. Her husband's untimely demise had left his family bereft of a breadwinner. She and her children were overcome with abject poverty. The final straw was that their landlord was trying to eject them from their home. Her incessant weeping took its toll on Rav Sholom, who broke down and began to cry with her. However the Divrei Chaim declared in a joyful tone:                                                                                                                                "Do not worry. Go home. I am confident things will work out for you."

After she had left, Rav Sholom, asked the Divrei Chaim how he could retain his happy disposition after listening to the widow's tale of woe. He responded:                                                                                                    "To be able to intercede on behalf of another Jew one must be filled with joy. After all, it is difficult to "sell something" that one does not believe in!”

JEWISH LAW TIP

Women have had the custom for centuries to hear Shofar. There is no reason for women not to blow Shofar themselves. The Minhag is to blow 30 Kolos, three of each set. There is a major discussion as to whether Shvarim-T’ruah should be done in one breath or two. In this case they should be done in one breath.

There is a Machlokes whether women can make Brachos on Mitzvos on which they are exempt (Rabbeinu Tam) or not (Rambam). Sephardic women do not make the Bracha. Ashkenazic women may make a Bracha on the  blowing of the Shofar herself. However a man who has already fulfilled his Mitzva should not make the Bracha. A woman should make the Bracha for herself and include others.

Have a wonderful Shabbos!
