The Eternal Shabbos – Vayigash

For the Year 2000 Millennium issue, the New York Times ran three different front pages. One was from January 1, 1900; the second was from January 1, 2000; and the third projected future events for the beginning of the 22nd century January 1, 2100. Among the news stories in this fictional issue was the establishment of Cuba as the fifty-first state of the USA; another article debated whether robots should be allowed to vote.  A surprising insert was a Jewish candle-lighting time on the front page of the January 1, 2100 Friday newspaper.  This odd inclusion piqued the curiosity of many individuals.  When the production manager of The Times was questioned about the inclusion, his response was stunning:

"We don't know what will happen in the year 2100. It is impossible to predict the future. But of one thing you can be certain that in the year 2100, Jewish women will be lighting Shabbos candles!"

Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Moshe Cohen

Halacha of the Week

Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach z”l explained that In Eretz Yisroel the prevalent minhag is for the kallah to cover her hair after yichud at her chasuna.  In other places that seems not to be the minhag. There is no explicit source for a minhag to be lenient.  Nevertheless, the fact is that many people, even yorei shomayim, are lenient. Therefore, if the kallah agrees to cover her hair, that would be optimal.  However, he held that it is not worth having arguments over this issue.

Dear Beloved

Dear Beloved

Assalamu alaikum!!!

My contacting you is based on trust. I have seen war and I have seen peace, I have seen riches and I have seen people die of hunger on daily bases. And I am quite certain that life is vanity; the only life worth living is a life of service to the almighty One God, most merciful, most compassionate and most benevolent. This is the reason for my present decision based absolutely on taqwa.

I am Khalid the only surviving child of the Gen. Abdulaziz Shihab, one of the UNITA rebel leaders of Angola. My late father fought the agonising protected Angolan civil war from the very scratch, and was in charge of selling diamonds and other solid minerals of the rebel strong hood area, as well as purchasing arms and am munitions in return. This position made him very rich and powerful. So powerful that the late Dr. Jonas Malheiro Savimbi the head and founder of the UNITA guerrillas felt threatened that he planned to get rid of my father.

As much as I can remember, one Sunday I was away with my mother when a handful of soldiers obviously sent by the late Dr. Jonas Malheiro Savimbi went to our house and killed my father, my two sisters and brother. They also executed everyone that bear ed the same surname with us in my village, thus making sure that we were completely wiped out the surface of the earth. An aid loyal to my father met with me and my mother and sneaked us to Zambia a neighbouring country, from where we travelled to London, My mother died of extreme cancer a month ago here and here am I on my sick diagnosed of HIV 1 & 2 i.e. full blown AIDS and I have a few months to live. Three months ago my late mother took me to the Bank Finance Company where my late father deposited large sum of money ($2.5m) he acquired during the war, and I took posses ion. I do not want this money to get into wrong hands by means of intestate laws.

My late father probably did not do thing right and fate has dealt with us decisively, but lying here on my dying bed I am determined to do thing right to enable me die in a state of Taahir, by passing this fund on to a God fearing person not minding his or her religion or an Organisation that will use it to pro gate Peace to the glory of the almighty One God, take care of the wakes of the earth ( the widows, old and orphans) . If you know and believe in your heart that you stand up for a good course and bring glory to the name of Allah, distinguish yourself in this world full of evil and corruption and use this money just as I have said, then get in touch with me immediately forwarding the following details.

(1) Your full contact detail
(2) Your telephone and fax number(s)
(3) Your Date and place of birth
(4) Your Occupation

So that I can forward to the security company to contact you, Time is of the essence, because it is imperative that you pull this fund to your bank account now that I am still alive to avoid eminent confrontation and refusal by the Finance company when I am gone.

Note: My mother told me before she died that my father did not disclose to the security company that he was depositing money with the fear that they might run away with it, he deposited it as FAMILY TREASURE, So they dint know the content is in a TRUCK BOX which I only have the UNLOCK CODE.

Awaiting your immediate reply.

Yours in faith,

Khalid Abdulaziz

Chanukah – The miracle of nature

R. Yosef Yoizel Horowitz, The Alter of Navardok, was once sitting in a cabin in the woods learning Torah. His only source of light was a candle which was almost at its end. R. Yosef Yoizel was worried that he would be forced to stop learning, but he strengthened himself with thoughts of bitachon. He had strong faith that HaShem could provide a solution for him even in his isolated location. He walked to the front of the cabin, opened the door, and was startled to see someone approaching him from the woods. The stranger handed him a candle and disappeared into the woods. R' Yosef Yoizel, who never discovered the identity of the stranger, saved the candle stub for twenty-five years. He viewed it as proof of the miracle, and as a reminder of what could happen if one places his full faith in HaShem.

Eventually, a fire which engulfed Navardok destroyed the candle. R. Yosef Yoizel viewed this as a sign that there is no need for tangible proof of the reality of living with faith in HaShem. He felt that his initial excitement over the miracle of the candle was a lack of faith. A person with true bitachon should not be fazed by such seemingly unexplainable incidents. Instead, one should be constantly cognizant that nature itself is miraculous, and miracles can be natural.

Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Moshe Cohen

Halacha of the Week: Lighting Chanukah Candles

Shulchan Aruch:  In shul we first light Chanukah licht and then make havdala.

Rama: At home we light Chanukah licht first.

Biur Halacha: Later Achronim disagree regarding the order at home.

Mogen Avrom / Elya Rabba / Gra: light Chanuka licht first

Taz / Maharal / Tos Yom Tov: Make havdala first

Ben Ish Chai and Rav Ovadia Yosef rule that at home one should recite Havdalah and subsequently kindle Chanukah lights.

Rav David Zvi Hoffman: Minhag in Germany was to perform Havdalah first.

Aruch Hashulchan: the practice in Lithuania was to perform Havdalah first, unless he heard Havdalah in Shul. It is permitted to choose either minhag to follow if you have no minhag.
