Shavuos - Torah is our life

Rabbi Dov Berish Weidenfeld the Rov of Tshebin (1881-1965) in Yerushalayim was a noted Torah scholar. His hasmoda (a person who does not waste a moment) was legendary.  As a child, as a Rov and even until the final moments of his life, he was constantly engaged with Torah.

R. Chaim Shmuelevitz, the Rosh HaYeshiva of the Mirrer Yeshiva told the following story at the eulogy of R. Dov Berish:

He (R. Chaim) another Rov had once come to visit R. Dov Berish.  Rov Dov Berish graciously welcomed them into his home. The visiting rabbis asked their host to join them in discussing a matter of communal importance but were surprised when he declined.

“Do not think that the matter is unimportant” said R. Dov Berish, “on the contrary it is of great urgency. You both must involve yourself in it.  I, on the other hand am simply unable to come with you, for my very life depends on it. You see, some years ago, I was extremely ill—close to death—and I davened to HaShem: “Ribon shel Olam ich vil lernen Dein Torah!! ( I want to learn Your Torah! HaShem answered my prayers and spared my life and therefore I must keep learning in order that I stay alive!!”

Shabbat Shalom, R’ Moshe Cohen

Jewish law tip

Mishne Brure forbids tying shoes with a double knot.  It is even forbidden to tie shoes with a single knot and bow if the knot will remain for more than 24 hours (ex: he will slip off his shoes without untying them)

Aruch HaShulchan permits tying shoes with a double knot if it will be undone within 24 hours and this opinion may be relied upon in cases of necessity.

Dying to Learn Torah – Bechukosai

Rav Yosef Shlomo Horowitz was an older survivor of the Holocaust who had learned in prewar Europe. He had no surviving family and spent all his time learning in Ponovitz in Bnei Brak.  He always learned day and night standing at a Shtender. One day he did not show up in the yeshiva and one of the Bachurim immediately sent for a doctor to go to his house and check on him. The doctor arrived and found him at home in a weakened state, with only a few hours to live.

Immediately Rav Yechezkel Levenstein, the Mashgiach, was summoned to visit him. To the utter disbelief of the Mashgiach he found Reb Yosef sitting at a chair and learning Torah. Rav Yechezkel remarked,

“Reb Yosef, no one knows when he will take his last breath. Perhaps it would be best that you lie down!”

“Don’t worry. I have a few moments left and I can still “Chap Arein” a Blatt Gemoro.

After that I will retire so as not to fall from the chair!” replied Reb Yosef.

This all took place at 8:00p.m.  At 1:00 a.m. he retired to bed, said Shema Yisroel and returned his soul to his Creator.

Shabbat Shalom, R’ Moshe Cohen
