Rosh Chodesh Av
Rav Yitzchak Izik Sher, zl was visiting America, and was asked to deliver one of his famous shmuessen, ethical discourses, to a group of elderly rabbis. It was a few days before Rosh Hashanah when he  posed  the following question to them: "My friends,Yom haDin is quickly approaching. Do you have reason to be concerned? You observe Shabbos and kashrus; you are honest and do not speak lashon hora. What are you worried about? You lead lives of virtue." After a lengthy discourse, Rav Sher came to his point:
"Gentlemen, you are all fine Jews, and you do not sin. Yet you are able to pick up the New York Times in the morning, read that a man was killed and continue to drink your coffee. How can you drink your coffee when you have read that a woman has become a widow and that children have lost their father? You should faint in anguish, but you do not. Why not? Because you do not care how that death affects other people. Therefore you need to fear the Yom haDin, because HaShem is more stringent with tzaddikim than He is with common people.
Parshas Masei is always read on the Shabbos before Rosh Chodesh. Rosh Chodesh Av marks the beginning of the tragic nine days which conclude with Tisha B'Av. It is a time when all Jews should be especially sensitive to the needs of all of their brothers and sisters, to pray for them that Hashem alleviate their pain and troubles. With this merit of sensitivity, Hashem will finally transform Tisha B'Av into a festival of joy.

Good Shabbos,
Rabbi Cohen

Mattos – True to his word

Bamidbar 30:2  " ....he must not break his word "

Rav Elchonon Wasserman the main disciple of the Chofetz Chaim, once encountered a person from Baronovitch, where he had served as Rabbi and requested that he do a favor for a certain person in that town. However the person excused himself saying that he simply did not have the strength to do the chesed. After some time Rav Elchonon met him again. On this occasion he was completely debilitated and fatigued. He poured out his heart to Rav Elchonon about his weakened physical condition, and asked the the great Rav why HaShem had done this to him. Rav Elchonon answered:

“My dear friend, you brought this sickness on yourself. Do you not remember that some time ago, I asked a chesed from you and you said that you did not have the strength to do it. At that moment in the heavenly court a decree went out to fulfill your words!”

Good Shabbos,

Rabbi Cohen

Pinchas – The last wish of Chasam Sofer

In the final days of his life the Chasam Sofer reviewed all the Torah he learned in order to come to olom haba with his Torah intact.  In the last few hours of his life he realized that three of his Torah novellae were no longer clear in his mind.  He summoned his closest talmid, Rav Menachem Katz, who lived not far from Pressburg, where the Chasam Sofer lay deathly ill. Rav Menachem came immediately and reviewed with him these Torah thoughts. When he had concluded, the Chasam Sofer's face lit up content that he would return his neshama to its Maker complete.  As soon as they finished reviewing his Torah, the Chasam Sofer told Rav Menachem  who was a Kohen to quickly exit the room where he was laying. As he was leaving the room he heard the Chasam Sofer say “Shema Yisroel” and he departed from this world. Rav Katz later commented that his Rebbi cared so much about people that even in his dying moments  he held back the departure of his neshama until he was sure that Rav Katz was safely outside, in order that he not have to violate the mitzvos of the kohen

Good Shabbos,

Rabbi Cohen

Halachic Bulletin

Arizal: held that the brocho of sheheycheyanu is not made even on Shabbos during the three weeks.

Magen Avrom: held that it may be made on Shabbos during the three weeks

Gra: held that it may be made anytime throughout the three weeks.

Mishne Brure: The custom is not to make this brocho. This is the reason that  some do not buy or wear new clothes that would require the brocho. If the clothing needed alterations, it may be bought during the Three Weeks and altered after the Three Weeks. For a new fruit we are lenient to make the brocho on Shabbos. If the fruit will not be available after the three weeks one can make the brocho even during the week.
