Pinchas – The last wish of Chasam Sofer

In the final days of his life the Chasam Sofer reviewed all the Torah he learned in order to come to olom haba with his Torah intact.  In the last few hours of his life he realized that three of his Torah novellae were no longer clear in his mind.  He summoned his closest talmid, Rav Menachem Katz, who lived not far from Pressburg, where the Chasam Sofer lay deathly ill. Rav Menachem came immediately and reviewed with him these Torah thoughts. When he had concluded, the Chasam Sofer's face lit up content that he would return his neshama to its Maker complete.  As soon as they finished reviewing his Torah, the Chasam Sofer told Rav Menachem  who was a Kohen to quickly exit the room where he was laying. As he was leaving the room he heard the Chasam Sofer say “Shema Yisroel” and he departed from this world. Rav Katz later commented that his Rebbi cared so much about people that even in his dying moments  he held back the departure of his neshama until he was sure that Rav Katz was safely outside, in order that he not have to violate the mitzvos of the kohen

Good Shabbos,

Rabbi Cohen

Halachic Bulletin

Arizal: held that the brocho of sheheycheyanu is not made even on Shabbos during the three weeks.

Magen Avrom: held that it may be made on Shabbos during the three weeks

Gra: held that it may be made anytime throughout the three weeks.

Mishne Brure: The custom is not to make this brocho. This is the reason that  some do not buy or wear new clothes that would require the brocho. If the clothing needed alterations, it may be bought during the Three Weeks and altered after the Three Weeks. For a new fruit we are lenient to make the brocho on Shabbos. If the fruit will not be available after the three weeks one can make the brocho even during the week.

DOSE OF INSPIR “AISH” ON

Two weeks ago, Henry Wineburgh taught us that the Kohen who used the ashes of the red heifer to purify someone, would himself become impure. This is to show that giving without any expectations is the key to true happiness and meaning in your life- “zos chukkas hatorah,” this is the secret of the Torah.
