Vayera - Hidden Losses

“Y’kach Nah M’at Mayim....Let a little water be drawn”

R’ Yisroel Salant once found himself together with his colleague, R’ Mordechai Meltzer in one of the little Shuls in Vilna for Mincha (afternoon prayers). R’ Mordechai poured a generous amount of water from the basin to wash his hands, in accordance with the Halacha (Jewish law).  However, R’ Yisroel took only a small amount of water. In fact it was barely enough to make his hands wet.

“Is it not preferable to use more water to wash the hands before davening?” R’ Mordechai politely inquired from R’ Yisroel.

“Certainly,” answered R Yisroel.

“However it appears to me that this little Shul has a fixed number of Mispalellim (congregants) and I see there are no guests. No doubt the Shamash (sexton) draws only enough water for the regulars. If we use too much water and there is a shortage, it will be noticed by the Gabbai (warden) and he will be upset with the Shamash. Indeed he may have his salary reduced or even lose his job!!”

KIDDUSH SPONSOR

The Aish Community is sponsoring Kiddush in honor of our dear friends who are going to Israel in the coming week(s):

Esther & Jon Nicoll who have been pillars of Chesed (and the Chesed Committee),

Marc Morrison who has been a greeter and helped organize our Kiddushes,

Dahlia & Don Weinreich who continually demonstrate their committment to personal growth and the success of Aish's hospitality program.

Naami Heller who has served the community with love and dedication.

We will miss you all and wish you Hatzlacha U'Bracha in Eretz HaKodesh.

SEUDAH SHLISHIS SPONSOR

Jon and Esther Nicoll are sponsoring Seudah Shlishis in honor of a recent miracle from Hashem. When our son Yisroel Yaakov was born, some tests came back “positive” for a rare disorder. Additional tests were done and after 10 long days the results came back as a false positive. We are grateful and indebted to Hashem for His infinite kindness and deliverance of a healthy baby boy.

THANK YOU

Heather Cox would like to thank everyone in the Aish community who had a part in her path to Yiddishkeit. As my wedding is two weeks away, I want to let you know that I was only able to get to this point in my life by the grace of

G-d and the kindness of the Aish LA staff and community. Thank you!

The Nicoll family thanks the Aish community and its Rabbinical body who inspired, supported and led us on the path of Teshuva, our return to our heritage and Yiddishkeit! We are forever indebted and grateful for all the kindness shown to us as we leave to Eretz Yisroel in pursuit of spiritual growth.

Thank you to Jon Sher for driving the Tomchei Shabbos route this week.

JEWISH LAW TIP

On Shabbos, the Chanukah Menorah may not be moved with one's hands for any reason, neither while the lights are burning nor after they are extinguished. If necessary it may be moved with one's foot or elbow after the lights have burned out. If the place where the Menorah is standing is needed for another purpose, a non-Jew may be asked to move the Menorah after the lights are extinguished.

Candle lighting must take place as close as possible to the end of Shabbos. Indeed, some have the custom of lighting Chanukah candles even before Havdalah, while others light them immediately after Havdalah. One should hurry home from Shul and immediately recite Havdalah or light Chanukah candles.

It has been a pleasure working with all of you.

Have a wonderful Shabbos.

Lech Lecha

14:2 “They made a war with Bera the king of Sodom.”

Rabbi Yonason Eibeshitz of Prague was known as a child prodigy and constantly amazed people with his sharp wit and brilliant answers to any question. Once as a child he was learning Parshas Lech Lecha with his Rebbe. The Rebbe posed a question to the class.

“Who knows the name of the king of Sodom in the time of Avraham?”

“Beh’ra was the king of Sodom,” answered a very confident Yonason.

“I am surprised at you, Yonason,” declared the Rebbe.

“Does it not say in Pitom Haketores in the Davening that the king of Sodom was called Reva (one quarter)?”

Little Yonason did not miss a beat:

“Yes Rebbe, in the beginning his name was Beh’ra (with evil) but after Sodom was overturned his name became Reva (just a fraction, i.e. nothing)!!”

Noach – A Chicken on the Loose

Breishis 6:11 “and the earth was filled with “Chamas”

Medrash Rabbah: This refers to theft of an object of insignificant value.

R’ Isser Zalman Meltzer, the Rosh HaYeshiva of Etz Chaim in Yerushalayim a generation ago, was known to be a person of scrupulous honesty. One day as he walked in the street, deeply engrossed in thought, he by accident opened a gate and entered into a courtyard in Mea Shearim. As he walked in, a chicken took the opportunity to escape through the open gate into the street. R’ Issar Zalman immediately realized what had happened.  He turned around and began to pursue the hapless chicken. The scene was farcical. Here was one of the most renowned sages of Israel, bounding around and trying to catch a runaway chicken. However R’ Isser Zalman was not in the least concerned about the undignified behavior, and the loss of his honor. He was only concerned that his actions might result in a financial loss to the owner of a chicken, and he reasoned that he was accountable for that!
