Vayera – Chesed

In Slonim, a hachnasas orchim organization was founded which was funded by the kehilla.  At one point, the irreligious representatives of the community began raising opposition to the use of community funds for maintaining the organization.  They argued that respectable guests are anyway invited to private houses and therefore the organization was only providing hospitality for vagrants.

Rav Shabtai Yigal, the Rosh Yeshivah of Slonim stood up and said:

“It says in Avos that the world stands on three things, HaTorah, HaAvodah, and gemilus chassadim.  Why did the Tanah mention the first two thing with the “hey hayideah” – the Torah, the Avodah, and the third thing – gemilus chassadim- is mentioned without the first letter “hey”?

It must be that that Chazal saw with ruach hakodesh that days will come when it will be disputed in Yisrael what Torah is and what avodah is.  Therefore, they ascertained from the beginning that Torah is the Torah – Torah from the Shamayim, and avodah is the avodah – avodas Hashem.  However, they didn’t add the “hey hayideah” to gemillas chassadim because this mitzvah is without differentiation.  It’s not important to whom we are extending chesed –whether it be honored guests or vagrants.  Which one of us is greater than Avraham Avinu?  He exerted himself while he was ill to provide hospitality for guests and to prepare a meal for them, despite the fact that they appeared to him like Arabs.”

Good Shabbos,

Rabbi Cohen

Advanced Halachic Bulletin:

Rav Ephraim Greenblatt, in Rivevos Ephraim, holds that if you are davening maariv with a minyan of exactly ten men and one person davens a very long shmoneh esrei, you  do not have to wait for him to start kaddish. However for mincha or shachris, where there is chazoras hashatz, you need a minyan to answer amein, and it is therefore necessary and proper to wait.

Mishna Brura 55:32 held that kaddish may be said with a minyan of exactly ten men, even if more than one person is still davening as long as there is a majority of people answering to the kaddish.

Lech Lecha – A sell out bris mila

Breishis 17:10 zos brisi asher tishmeru  beynee uvenchem….

This is my covenant that I shall make between you and Me…..

The Sefas Emes, the great Rabbi of Ger, once asked a relative to bring his son, Avrohom Mordechai, to Warsaw, to receive a bracha from a certain Jew. The relative set out on the long and arduous journey. When he arrived in Warsaw, he made inquiries about the individual in question, thinking that he must be a well-known Tzadik. However, he had great difficulty in locating the individual in question. Furthermore, when he finally tracked him down, he appeared to be quite an ordinary fellow. Even after he had explained the purpose of his visit, this Jew was quite stunned and did not understand.

“If the Rebbe wishes that I give his son a bracha then I shall certainly do so, even though I have no idea why he would ask such a thing from me!”

The relative thought he must be one of the 36 hidden righteous people in the world. When he returned, he questioned the Sefas Emes, who told him that the fellow was indeed quite ordinary. However, once his wife had given birth to a son, but did not have money to make a seudas bris. He therefore sold his bed linens in order to have money to make the bris. This had made such an impression in heaven, that any future blessing that he would give would be fulfilled!

Good Shabbos,

Rabbi Cohen

Advanced Halachic Bulletin:

Mishna Brura It is permissible to eat seudah shlishis after sundown.  Even if you have already eaten, you may eat until half an hour before tzais hakochavim.

Az Nidbiru states that this only applies in countries where night is much later than sundown.  In Eretz Yisroel where night is a mere twenty minutes after sundown you are already within the half hour and should not eat after sundown.

In the USA you may still wash within 15 minutes after sundown
