Chesed Opportunity!

Dear Amazing Aish Hosts,

One of Rabbi Jacobs’ students is moving apartments and is looking for a place to stay between July 2nd and July 5th.  She does not have friends or family who can help her out.  If you can offer hospitality for even one of those nights, it will be a tremendous chesed.  For the few of you who will be in town, please seriously consider this request.   You might be the only one who has the space and availability to do it!

Thank you,

Pinchas – The fast track

A young talmid chochom, who had been diagnosed with a mysterious life threatening illness, came to the Chofetz Chaim for a brocho. The Chofetz Chaim listened to the young man and told him that he would give him advice on the condition that he would never reveal it to anyone. The young man agreed. The Chofetz Chaim then told him that he should go to visit a certain well known tsadik who lived in a city far from Radin, and ask him for a brocho. The young man went and received the brocho and miraculously within a very short time he began to feel better, and he eventually completely recovered from the illness. He returned to learning and never mentioned anything to anyone.

He got married and never thought about the matter again until some twenty years later his sister-in-law was stricken with the same mysterious illness that he had had. However, he remembered his promise to the Chofetz Chaim and said nothing. His wife also remembered that he had once mentioned that he had been ill as a young man and had a remarkable recovery and she began to question him about it. He tried to change the subject, but his wife was relentless. How could he watch her sister waste away? He explained that he had given his word never to reveal the details of his recovery, but in the end he capitulated, reasoning that after such a long time it probably did not matter. However, almost immediately he himself began to feel ill. He decided to go back to the Chofetz Chaim to ask for advice.

He traveled to Radin. The Chofetz Chaim was now old and weak. However, he remembered their meeting and listened intently as the man told the story.

“Please can the Chofetz Chaim help me?” implored the man.

“I wish that I could,” whispered the Chofetz Chaim who was now extremely frail.

“When you first came to me with the illness, I was a young man and I was able to fast for 40 days for you to recover. Now I am old and weak and I am not able to do that any more!”  Within a short time, the man passed away!

Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Moshe Cohen

Halacha of the Week

Arizal: held that the brocho of shehecheyanu is not made even on Shabbos during the three weeks.

Magen Avrom: held that it may be made on Shabbos during the three weeks.

Gra: held that it may be made anytime throughout the three weeks.

Mishne Brure: The custom is not to make this brocho. This is the reason that some do not buy or wear new clothes that would require the brocho. If the clothing needed alterations, it may be bought during the Three Weeks and altered after the Three Weeks. For a new fruit we are lenient to make the brocho on Shabbos. If the fruit will not be available after the three weeks, one can make the brocho even during the week.

Below is an inspiring letter from our friend Saul Blinkoff who is currently working in South Korea for the next few months:

…Needless to say, this time in Korea so far is more than difficult and extremely isolating. Finding kosher food has been extremely hard and my menu has diminished to very few things.

It seems mostly all of the things that help shape my identity are 'temporarily' gone – my wife and children, my home, friends, shul, community, food, even my language is gone – seriously NO ONE speaks any English anywhere here.  But I am grateful to have this opportunity to be able to make a parnassah for my family.

Thank G-d for the mitzvahs.  They have been a constant reminder to me of my 'true' identity, which has only been strengthened.  It’s amazing…when I was davening Shacharis my first morning here and I got to the…bracha about thanking Hashem for not making me a gentile, it really hit home, and my gratitude for being a part of the Jewish people was amplified – very powerful.

We really do take so much for granted living in the Pico area – it’s truly incredible how many resources there are to help us live our daily lives striving to grow in Torah and mitzvahs.

I can't tell you how excited I am to return for Rosh Hashanah to daven with all of you again!

Anyway, just wanted to say hi and wish…our incredible community a wonderful Shabbos!!

-- Saul

Halacha of the Week

Ramo OC 27:4 there is no problem of a chatzitza (interposition) between the retzuos (straps) of Tefilin and your arm except with the batim (boxes) of the Tefilin themselves.

Mogen Avrohom says there is a problem if there is an article of clothing between the tefilin and the arm, but not for a small thing.

Taz m’ikar hadin, (the law) a chatzitza is pasul (invalid) where the retzuos need to be tied.

Rav Moshe Shternbuch says that according to the Taz, the only place a chatzitza is pasul is around the head and the first tying around the arm, but not around the forearm which is only a "hiddur midivrei kabala." (Rabbinic beautification of the mitsva)

Nevertheless, the Gra, Pri Megadim and Kaf HaChaim all say that l'chatchila one should make sure not to have any chatzitza anywhere under the retzuos.

Rav Shternbuch conjectures that the reason is that if we allow a chatzitza under the retzuos of the forearm, people may think that there is no chatzitza by retzuos at all and only by the batim, which is wrong. Therefore we don't allow any chatzitza at all. Therefore, even though mikar hadin wearing a watch is not a chatzitza, we should still take it off.  However, with regard to dirt on the arm, we need not remove it because of chatzitza.
