Pinchas – The fast track
A young talmid chochom, who had been diagnosed with a mysterious life threatening illness, came to the Chofetz Chaim for a brocho. The Chofetz Chaim listened to the young man and told him that he would give him advice on the condition that he would never reveal it to anyone. The young man agreed. The Chofetz Chaim then told him that he should go to visit a certain well known tsadik who lived in a city far from Radin, and ask him for a brocho. The young man went and received the brocho and miraculously within a very short time he began to feel better, and he eventually completely recovered from the illness. He returned to learning and never mentioned anything to anyone.
He got married and never thought about the matter again until some twenty years later his sister-in-law was stricken with the same mysterious illness that he had had. However, he remembered his promise to the Chofetz Chaim and said nothing. His wife also remembered that he had once mentioned that he had been ill as a young man and had a remarkable recovery and she began to question him about it. He tried to change the subject, but his wife was relentless. How could he watch her sister waste away? He explained that he had given his word never to reveal the details of his recovery, but in the end he capitulated, reasoning that after such a long time it probably did not matter. However, almost immediately he himself began to feel ill. He decided to go back to the Chofetz Chaim to ask for advice.
He traveled to Radin. The Chofetz Chaim was now old and weak. However, he remembered their meeting and listened intently as the man told the story.
“Please can the Chofetz Chaim help me?” implored the man.
“I wish that I could,” whispered the Chofetz Chaim who was now extremely frail.
“When you first came to me with the illness, I was a young man and I was able to fast for 40 days for you to recover. Now I am old and weak and I am not able to do that any more!” Within a short time, the man passed away!
Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Moshe Cohen
Halacha of the Week
Arizal: held that the brocho of shehecheyanu is not made even on Shabbos during the three weeks.
Magen Avrom: held that it may be made on Shabbos during the three weeks.
Gra: held that it may be made anytime throughout the three weeks.
Mishne Brure: The custom is not to make this brocho. This is the reason that some do not buy or wear new clothes that would require the brocho. If the clothing needed alterations, it may be bought during the Three Weeks and altered after the Three Weeks. For a new fruit we are lenient to make the brocho on Shabbos. If the fruit will not be available after the three weeks, one can make the brocho even during the week.
