Purim – quid pro quo

Rav Elazar Rokeach of Amsterdam was a respected confidant of the Queen of Holland. One year on Purim, the Queen learned that the dikes around Holland were in danger of collapsing, posing a serious threat of flooding to the entire country. She sent messengers to Rav Elazar, requesting that he pray on behalf on the entire country.

Rav Elazar immediately ordered that many more bottles of the finest wines be brought to his table. Soon everyone was engaged in drink and song. Later that evening, the Queen sent her messengers back to Rav Elazar to let him know that the dangerous situation was over. When the messengers arrived at Rav Elazar's house, they were shocked to see everyone singing, feasting, and drinking! They immediately returned to the Queen, who was taken aback by their report. She sent a message to Rav Elazar: "I thought that when you heard the terrible news, you would proclaim a fast day, and call for mass prayer. I do not understand how you could drink so cavalierly and rejoice when you knew that the entire country was in peril!"

Rav Elazar explained: "The best way to appease HaShem is to do His will. When we listen to His word and do His bidding, He acts towards us in a similar fashion and grants us our requests. Today was Purim. We are commanded to rejoice and celebrate. I therefore instructed my people to celebrate today for the honor of HaShem. In this way, I hoped that in the merit that I fulfilled His wishes today, so too would He fulfill our wishes…..and indeed, that appears to be the case!"

Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Moshe Cohen

Halacha of the Week

Shulchan Aruch states that you must daven the way you would appear before important people.  Rav Vosner was asked if it is permitted to daven wearing a costume on Purim.  He answered that we are not concerned about the external garments. Your demeanor and attitude should reflect standing in front of important people.  If you are davening with respect and seriousness, it doesn't make a difference what kind of hat or clothing you are wearing.

Chesed Opportunity

Dear Community,

There is a woman in our community who has a mental illness and who, without the community's support, would be homeless.  In fact, she used to be a part of the Aish Community many years ago before she got sick.  The money to pay for the apartment where she is living in Pico-Robertson has been paid for over the years by those of us who live here, and currently 5 shuls in our neighborhood have each committed to raising 1/5 of the yearly rent.

For the past 10 years or so, Aish HaTorah has had the zechus of being one of those shuls and we would like to continue to do so.  As such, it is time to raise the money again for another year's rent for her. Aish's portion of the yearly rent is $1,200.  Anyone who would like to participate in this worthy endeavor should do the following:  Make out a check to The Tzedakah Fund and in the memo write “RENT.” PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS NOT "THE AISH TZEDDAKAH FUND" AND ANY SUCH CHECKS WILL BE RETURNED AND HAVE TO BE RE-WRITTEN.  Get the check to Holly Magady at 1515 Glenville Drive, Los Angeles, CA 90035DO NOT DROP ANY CHECKS OFF AT THE AISH OFFICE. IF YOU DO SO, IT MAY GET DEPOSITED INTO THE AISH HATORAH GENERAL FUND AND NONE OF IT WILL GO TO HELP THIS WOMAN.  Any questions can be directed to Holly Magady by phone (310-286-9849 or 310-490-7149) or by email at danyoni@aol.com.

Terumah – The best cure

Shemos 25:2 “v’yikchu li teruma” “and they will take for me a gift…”

The Jewish community in Lita decided to establish a Jewish hospital, and a meeting was held for this purpose, chaired by the Chofetz Chaim.  Several wealthy men attended the meeting, and each of them pledged significant donations.  One donated a hospital bed and some even donated several beds.  The Chofetz Chaim showed much respect to the wealthy men for using their wealth for such a noble purpose.

At some point several talmidim showed up at the meeting and the Chofetz Chaim also treated them with great respect.  One of the wealthy men was surprised at this and disparagingly commented to the Chofetz Chaim: “So how many beds did these talmidim donate?”

The Chofetz Chaim answered without pausing: “What do you mean? Don’t you know that each one of them gave fifty beds?”

The wealthy man was astounded and asked: “What do you mean that they gave fifty beds?  We only donated ten beds and we have much more money than they have. How could they have given fifty?”

The Chofetz Chaim repeated his answer: “Each one of them gave fifty beds which will not be needed.  Each one learns Torah which is the best protection!  Their Torah learning will save many people from needing to be hospitalized!”

Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Moshe Cohen

Halacha of the Week

There are two psukim that people rely on to do mitzvos under dangerous circumstances. One is "shomer mitzva lo yeida davar ra” – one who performs a mitzva will not come to any harm.  The second is "shomer psayim HaShem," – HaShem watches over the fools.

Rav Menashe Klein explains that in regard to “shomer mitzvah….” you can only rely on this pasuk to keep harm away if the bad thing is related to mazal and not natural cause and effect.  If you are doing something that is inherently dangerous, the fact that you are doing a mitzvah is no guarantee that you will not be harmed.  In regard to the pasuk “Shomer psayim HaShem,” only if everyone acts this way will you have protection.

TAANIS ESTHER BREAK-FAST

Donna Karmel is sponsoring a break-fast at Aish LA after Taanis Esther on Thurs, Feb 25, in memory of her brother, Rabbi Dovid Levitan, Dovid ben Nochum Hirsch haLevy, Z”L, on his first yahrtzeit, which falls on Taanis Esther.   “My brother is a very special neshomo.  He was born on Shabbos, passed away on Shabbos and his levaya was on Purim.   He was a beacon of emunah, often saying, ‘I love you, Hashem’ during his 2 ½ -year-long battle against stage 4 colon cancer.  The purity of his heart and soul defined him to his final days with us.  Please dedicate your brochos during the break fast to his aliyas neshomo.”
