Bo – Love is Not Blind

Shemos 10:23 “law raw’oo ish es achiv.”

“No one could see one another.”

The following story was passed down by the talmidim of the Vilna Gaon.

One of the students of the Gra became blind as a young man. Despite this handicap he refused to stop learning, and continued to spend all of his days in the beis medrash memorizing the Torah that he had learned before he went blind, and indeed he succeeded in becoming a Torah scholar. In fact the Gra took a personal interest in finding an appropriate match for the young man. The young woman agreed to the shidduch and her father agreed to support them in his home.

The joy of the Gaon was very great on the day of the wedding. It was the time for the bedeken and naturally the Gra was present. Suddenly he turned to the choson and exclaimed:

“How can you marry this woman? Chazal say that it is forbidden for a man to marry a woman before he has seen her!”

At that moment the choson turned towards his kallah, opened his eyes, and he was able to see again!

Shabbat Shalom,

R Cohen

Vaera – The joy of “dayan haemes”

Shemos 6:3 “va’era el Avrohom el Yitzchok v’el Yakov b’Kel Shakkai ushmi HaShem lo nodati lahem.”

“I appeared to Avrohom Yitzchok and Yakov…but I did not make known my name…”

Rashi: “chaval al haovdin v’law mishtachin….” woe for those that are lost and not found (i.e. the patriarchs….”)

Before the pogrom of the Arabs in Chevron, the Alter of Slabodka opened a yeshiva in Chevron. The son of the Rosh HaYeshiva, a highly promising talmid chochom, passed away suddenly in his mid twenties, before he was married.

The funeral was set for a certain time. The Alter was in Chevron, but he came to the funeral almost an hour late. This was very uncharacteristic of the Alter to keep people waiting for an hour. Someone asked him for an explanation and he told them:

“The brocho of “Dayan ha’emes” has to be said with joy but I was not feeling joy so I waited an hour to prepare myself for the funeral!”

Shabbat Shalom,

R Cohen

HALACHA OF THE WEEK

Ask all your Jewish-related questions to Rabbi Cohen at asktherabbi@aishla.com.  All questions will be answered and a few will be published in the bulletin each week.

Q: If I remembered in the middle of Shemone Esrei that I was not wearing a Kipa, what do I do?

A: You must stop davening and go put on a kipa and continue the Shemonei Esrei in the place where you put on the kipah.

*********

Q: What do I do if I have a band aid on my finger, as far as washing is concerned?

A: It would only need to be removed for washing for bread, and then only if it would not be painful to wash with an open wound.

*If you think any of these cases apply to you, please make sure to ask your own question because your particular details may render a different answer.

YOM KIPPUR KOTON THIS  SUNDAY AT Aish at 4:45 p.m

Rav Bess met with gedolim in Eretz Yisroel and asked about the tragic events that have recently occurred in LA

HoRav Shmuel Auerbach shlita said that we no longer live in the era of the Nevi'im and it is not our job to look for reasons why certain things occur, but it is our obligation to grow from these things and strengthen our learning, tefillah and maasim tovim.

HoRav Chaim Kanievsky shlita said that the people should daven Yom Kippur Koton this Sunday and fast until Chatzos and that this is a great segulah to be mevatel gezeiros raos

HoRav Aaron Leib Shteiman shlita said the way to fight these gezeiros is through enhancing and initiating new chesed projects in the community e.g a gmach for various types of medications or other medical needs that may not be available after-hours. Bringing relief and help for almonos and yesomim in the community is another type of chesed that should be enhanced. He said that while increasing Torah learning is surely important in such times, specifically we should be looking for innovative [and old] ways of doing more and more chesed.
