Pardon for Pollard

Gedolei Yisroel - including the top rabbinic leadership of Agudath Israel, in a statement dated Shvat 5767/January 2007 - have called upon members of the community to contact the White House to respectfully urge President Bush on humanitarian grounds to grant Jonathan Pollard executive clemency.  In the waning days of the Bush Administration, a group of responsible askonim have undertaken a national grassroots campaign on Pollard's behalf.  Information about the campaign is available at www.freepollardnow.com.  We encourage our friends and constituents to participate in this effort.

Chayei Sarah – A Match Made in Heaven

The Tzanzer Rov, Rav Chaim Halberstam, was a brilliant Torah scholar. Even as a young man his fame spread throughout Europe. However, he was born with a physical deformity, one leg being noticeably shorter than the other, so that he limped when he walked. Many prospective shidduchim rejected him because of this condition. One day, his parents notified him that the daughter of a great Rabbi, had declined a match with him.

Rav Chaim told his parents that he wished to meet with the father and the young lady. A meeting was arranged. Rav Chaim began by citing Chazal's statement that forty days prior to a child's conception, a decree comes forth from Heaven that so-and-so will marry so-and-so. He continued: "Before I was born, my neshama asked to see my destined wife. She was perfect but there was one flaw."

"What was the flaw?" she asked.

"She limped because one leg was shorter than the other. It caused me so much pain knowing that outward appearances are more important for women than for men, that I asked the Heavenly tribunal if I could be afflicted with this physical imperfection instead.  They saw how concerned I was and they gave me the limp instead of you. I have a limp today, so that you do not.”

When the young woman heard these words, she rose from her chair and left the room. A few hours later, she approached her father and said that she had changed her mind and consented to the marriage.

Shabbat Shalom, R’ Moshe Cohen

HALACHOS OF THE WEEK

Ask all your Jewish-related questions to Rabbi Cohen at asktherabbi@aishla.com.  All questions will be answered and a few will be published in the bulletin each week.  There will be a raffle after four weeks of published questions.

Q: If one cooks sharp, pareve food on meat equipment, must one wait after eating it before having dairy? Does it matter if the pot was used within 24 hours or not used within 24 hours?

A: In both instances, the answer is that you do not have to wait.

Q: If I eat cereal with chopped bananas, I only make a bracha on the cereal. But if I specifically want to have a spoonful of just bananas, should I make a separate bracha?

A: If there is such a small amount of banana, it would be considered secondary and not require a separate bracha even if you took a separate spoonful or even if there was banana left after the cereal was finished.

*If you think any of these cases apply to you, please make sure to ask your own question because your particular details may render a different answer.

GET TO KNOW OUR NEW MEMBERS…

Ryan and Lisa Schneider are LA natives who recently moved to Pico-Robertson to join the Aish community. Ryan and Lisa met as young children when Lisa used to play with Ryan's sister. Although Ryan wasn't ready to propose to Lisa at age seven, 25 years later he finally worked up the confidence to pop the question.

Lisa is a graduate of UCLA and Ryan is a graduate of USC.  For the sake of shalom bayis, they never discuss college loyalties unless Bill Gross forces the issue. When Ryan first walked into Aish, he had no idea that Aish was a Torah observant shul and attempted to literally run out the back gate. Fortunately, R Jacobs intercepted him and convinced him to come for a “quick lunch.” Lisa became observant during college and graduate school. R Jacobs married Ryan and Lisa last year. Lisa is the Associate Director of the Casden Institute at USC and teaches Hebrew at the Jewish Learning Academy.  Ryan currently practices law.
