Noach – If I am not for myself…

Bereishis 6:9 "These are the generations of Noach; Noach was a righteous man"

Rashi: This teaches that the main legacy of righteous people is their good deeds.

When the Gaon Reb Yaakov Yosef Charif was a Rabbi in New York, one of the wealthiest Jews in the city came to visit him and said: "For many years now I have worked to amass a great fortune, and now Boruch HaShem, I have been successful. However, I am an old man, and I have been unable to learn as much as I would have liked. I wish to do something that will ensure that I receive a decent portion in the world to come. My sons are like me and are devoted to the business, and I fear that after I have departed they will not do for me as much as I need."

Rav Yaakov Yosef replied that he should donate a generous amount to several Torah institutions and cited the Rashi above. Then he added, "A person should not rely on his children's good deeds. This is especially true in our generation, where often a child's involvement in Yiddishkeit is limited to a 'maftir' and a 'niftar.' The wealthy Jew had a puzzled look on his face.

R. Yaakov Yosef explained himself further: "The maftir is what he reads when he receives his aliyah at his bar mitzvah; and the niftar is when he says kaddish for a deceased parent!"

Shabbat Shalom, R' Moshe Cohen

SEND IN YOUR QUESTIONS THIS WEEK – THE FIRST RAFFLE IS NEXT SHABBOS.

 * * *

 Q: What is the proper way to dispose of the lulav and esrog? Is it preferable that the esrog be eaten in some form and, if this is not desirable, can it be disposed of in the same manner as the lulav?

 A: It is permissible to dispose of the lulav, hadasim, arovos and esrogim (that are not from Israel) in the green bins. It is better to wrap them in newspaper first. Esrogim that are from Eretz Yisroel should preferably be returned to the store from which they were purchased and sent back to Eretz Yisroel. They may be eaten, but even the peels and pits must be eaten because they have kedushas shviis. They may not be kept after Tu B'shevat.

 * * *

 Q: When I am davening shemonei esrei and am not finished before the chazan begins kedushah, am I allowed to respond?

 A: You are correct that if you are in the middle of shemonei esrei you cannot respond and you must pause and listen while the chazzan says "kadosh…" and "boruch..." In order to respond, you need to have said: "yeheyu l'ratzon..." at the end of the shemonei esrei.

 * If you think any of these cases apply to you, please make sure to ask your own question because your particular details may render a different answer.

Bereishis – Labor in Torah

Bereishis 3:16 “In great pain will you give birth”

It happened that a woman giving birth in Laniado hospital in Netanya was in such pain that she was disturbing the other patients with her blood curdling screams.

One of the midwives came to her bedside and whispered something in her ear and almost immediately she stopped screaming, and shortly afterwards she gave birth. Later one of the nursing staff asked the midwife what she had told her. She answered that she had mentioned a well known Medrash to the woman which calmed her.

When the infant is in the womb it is taught the entire Torah. The reason that her baby was not coming out was because it had still some Torah that it had not completed learning. In a few moments it would finish learning and be ready to leave.

Shabbat Shalom, R’ Moshe Cohen

HALACHA OF THE WEEK

Although the yamim tovim have passed, the chance to keep learning is still here!  Take advantage of the unique opportunity to ask your Jewish-related questions to Rabbi Cohen at asktherabbi@aishla.com

All questions will be answered and two will be published in the bulletin each week (anonymously upon request).  The published questions will be entered into a monthly raffle for a gift certificate to 613: The Mitzvah Store.  The more you ask, the more you will know!

* * *

Q: Let's say someone ate some food, made the after bracha, and then discovered a piece of food caught between his or her teeth.  Does the food need to be spit out? Does a new bracha rishona need to be made?

A: It is not considered food any longer and does not require a new brocha.

* * *

Q: A non-Jewish gardener comes to my house every Thursday. At times, the Jewish holidays – which have most of the same prohibitions as Shabbos – take place during the week. Does one have to make efforts to re-arrange a regularly scheduled melacha performed by a non-Jew?

A: The real problem having a non-Jewish gardener work for you on Shabbos or Yom Tov is zilzul Shabbos/Yom Tov. This means not treating Shabbos with proper respect.  Therefore, one should try to have him come on another day or ask him to leave.

* * *

Q: What is the proper stance one must have during davening? Are there prohibitions about what we do with our hands while davening?

According to Shulchan Aruch, one should stand with feet together during shemoneh esrei. It is acceptable to have one’s feet slightly apart for balance but not “at ease.” During the rest of davening, you can be standing at ease or sit.

During shemoneh esrei, it is not permitted to lean on something in such a way that if it was removed you would fall. It is not permitted to stand during shemoneh esrei with one’s hands on his hips or under his chin as this appears like arrogance or boredom. I do not think hands in pockets is a problem.

  • If you think any of these cases apply to you, please make sure to ask your own question because your particular details may render a different answer.

COMMUNITY CORNER

Social Team:

Many thanks to the following people who helped make Aish’s first Sukkah Hop so much fun and such a great success: Sam Glaser (and Matt), Marcia Glaser, Joni Krevoy, Weinmans, Quinns, Seidenfelds, Shmagins, Kahns, Saks’s, Aufrichtigs, Veitzers, Goldwags, and Heather Fuller.  80 community members ate dinner hopping from sukkah to sukkah Sunday night and over 100 people enjoyed Sam’s amazing concert while delighting in scrumptious desserts.  You won’t want to miss this next year!

Childcare Team:

The Sun morning Pancakes ‘n Ice Cream Breakfast was a huge success! Over 30 kids attended, drenched their pancakes in chocolate sauce, played musical chairs and other games, and designed a name and creative poster for their Shabbos group. Special thanks to Ze’ev Amster and Elana Aufrichtig for helping lead the morning’s activities with the madrichim. The kids had an unforgettable time!
