Bereishis – Labor in Torah
Bereishis 3:16 “In great pain will you give birth”
It happened that a woman giving birth in Laniado hospital in Netanya was in such pain that she was disturbing the other patients with her blood curdling screams.
One of the midwives came to her bedside and whispered something in her ear and almost immediately she stopped screaming, and shortly afterwards she gave birth. Later one of the nursing staff asked the midwife what she had told her. She answered that she had mentioned a well known Medrash to the woman which calmed her.
When the infant is in the womb it is taught the entire Torah. The reason that her baby was not coming out was because it had still some Torah that it had not completed learning. In a few moments it would finish learning and be ready to leave.
Shabbat Shalom, R’ Moshe Cohen
HALACHA OF THE WEEK
Although the yamim tovim have passed, the chance to keep learning is still here! Take advantage of the unique opportunity to ask your Jewish-related questions to Rabbi Cohen at asktherabbi@aishla.com.
All questions will be answered and two will be published in the bulletin each week (anonymously upon request). The published questions will be entered into a monthly raffle for a gift certificate to 613: The Mitzvah Store. The more you ask, the more you will know!
* * *
Q: Let's say someone ate some food, made the after bracha, and then discovered a piece of food caught between his or her teeth. Does the food need to be spit out? Does a new bracha rishona need to be made?
A: It is not considered food any longer and does not require a new brocha.
* * *
Q: A non-Jewish gardener comes to my house every Thursday. At times, the Jewish holidays – which have most of the same prohibitions as Shabbos – take place during the week. Does one have to make efforts to re-arrange a regularly scheduled melacha performed by a non-Jew?
A: The real problem having a non-Jewish gardener work for you on Shabbos or Yom Tov is zilzul Shabbos/Yom Tov. This means not treating Shabbos with proper respect. Therefore, one should try to have him come on another day or ask him to leave.
* * *
Q: What is the proper stance one must have during davening? Are there prohibitions about what we do with our hands while davening?
According to Shulchan Aruch, one should stand with feet together during shemoneh esrei. It is acceptable to have one’s feet slightly apart for balance but not “at ease.” During the rest of davening, you can be standing at ease or sit.
During shemoneh esrei, it is not permitted to lean on something in such a way that if it was removed you would fall. It is not permitted to stand during shemoneh esrei with one’s hands on his hips or under his chin as this appears like arrogance or boredom. I do not think hands in pockets is a problem.
- If you think any of these cases apply to you, please make sure to ask your own question because your particular details may render a different answer.
