Respect – Lag B’Omer

Yevomos 62b “kulam meisu …mepnei shelo nohagu kavod zeh law zeh”

“R. Avkiva’s students died because they did not show respect to each other.”

R. Refoel Levine, son of “the tzadik in our time,” R' Aryeh Levine, was a remarkable person in his own right. As with his father, his tzidkus was most evident in his tremendous concern and love for his fellow Jews, especially those who were in need of support and encouragement.

One Motzei Shabbos as he was walking to the Kosel with a talmid, a man approached and greeted him. R. Refoel inquired about his wife and children. For the next few hours the two men spoke intently. R' Refoel listened carefully the entire time and occasionally seemed to offer the man words of comfort and encouragement. When the conversation was over, he wished the man heartfelt brochos and sent regards to his family. He reassured the man that he would daven for him. After seeing how much time R' Refoel had spent with the stranger, R. Refoel's talmid asked curiously:

"Rebbe who was that man?"

R' Refoel responded: "I really don't know. However, this is something I learned from my father. If someone greets you as if he recognizes you, you should respond to him in the same way!”

Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Moshe Cohen

Halacha of the Week

Ramo paskens that for those who take a haircut and shave on Lag Ba'Omer it is permitted to do so on Friday when Lag Ba'Omer falls on Sunday like this year. Since it is permitted to shave on Sunday, it is not kavod Shabbos to be unkempt on Shabbos and groom oneself right afterwards on Sunday.  Although others disagree, we are noheg like the Rema.  Everyone agrees that listening to music is not permitted until Sunday.

A Quick Worrier – Kedoshim

Vayikra 19:26 “….do not rely on signs…”

The Avnei Nezer, Rav Avrohom Borenstein, was married to the daughter of the Kotzker Rebbe.  They lived in dire poverty, yet he never seemed to be concerned with his plight.  One day his frustrated wife asked him:

"Tell me why it is that our poverty does not concern you at all?"  The Avnei Nezer answered:

"I worry as much as everyone else, but with one big difference.  Your great father took me as a son-in-law because of my brilliant mind and that which takes others an entire day to think about, I am able to think through in a few moments.  So while other poor people spend their entire day worrying and are consumed with their predicament, I spend a few moments every morning thinking about everything they can possibly think of during the entire day.  At that point I can get on with all the other things on my daily agenda!"

Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Moshe Cohen

Halacha of the Week

Even though technically you may continue eating if you started before the zman of sefira, many times people forget to count if they daven early. Therefore, the minhag in Frankfurt was to stop the meal and count sefira when it became nightfall.

Rav Shlomo Zalman once told a bochur who davened with a late minyan for maariv in Yeshiva, that he should count without a bracha as soon as it becomes night and have in mind that he only wants to be yotzei with this counting if he forgets to count later on during Maariv with a bracha.
