UPDATE: High Holiday Aliyos Auction

Dear Community Members,

As we prepare ourselves for the High Holidays, we would like to bring to your attention the following opinion which is common practice in the Torah world.

The Chofetz Chaim zt”l writes in Mishne Brura 584:8: “It is most appropriate for every ….individual to make an effort to get an Aliyah on the High Holidays. Even ….when these mitzvos are sold, one should buy them in accordance with his means. A mitzvah that is attained through expenditure is of greater value than a mitzvah attained for free.”

Therefore, we would like to extend to you the opportunity to participate in our High Holiday mitzvos and receive HaShem’s munificent blessing in repayment of your efforts.

We are holding a ‘silent auction’ for all Aliyos on 1st & 2nd day Rosh HaShana and Yom Kippur (see list below). Please submit your ‘bid’ ($180 minimum for all Aliyahs, $100 minimum for Hagbah, $36 minimum for Gelilah). Bids will be accepted as they are received by email (tsullivan@aishla.com) or voicemail (310-278-8672x305).  There will be a weekly (bid only) update posted in the Shabbos bulletin and email.  The deadline for each auction will be announced in the coming weeks.

Thank you in advance for your continued support.

May you be inscribed in the Book of Life for a sweet year!

Rabbi Moshe Cohen

Blessings and Curses – Elul

The Skolye Rebbe once returned to his apartment on the first day of Rosh Hashanah between Shacharis and Mussaf.  As he opened the door, he found his apartment in total chaos. He had been robbed and the apartment had been totally ransacked. The possessions that were stolen included those he had brought from Europe and were irreplaceable, such as treasured family heirlooms that had belonged to his illustrious ancestors.  Years later, when the Rebbe was very sick at the end of his life, he recalled:

"I remembered that I returned to shul to daven before the amud. The loss that I had suffered I put completely out of my thoughts. It was as if nothing at all had happened."

The Rebbe related this story to explain that he felt that this incident, in which he endured a tremendous loss without any negative feelings, was one of the main reasons that he was zoche to live the life that he lived and to receive the brochos with which HaShem blessed him.

Shabbat Shalom, Rabbi Moshe Cohen

Halacha of the Week

If you accidentally forgot to daven Mincha, you may daven Shmoneh Esrei at Maariv twice.

Rav Ephraim Greenblatt says that the Acharonim hold that even if you are in middle of a business deal and you will lose money if you stop to daven, that is also considered unavoidable and you may continue your dealings and daven Shmoneh Esrei at Maariv twice. In fact, even if you will only lose profit, it is still considered unavoidable. Furthermore, even If you had the whole afternoon to daven but decided to wait for later and only when later came you found yourself caught up in business, this is also considered unavoidable.  The fact that you did not daven earlier does not make you negligent since you had every reason to believe you would be able to daven later.
