Beshallach – The power of prayer
Yaakov was known not only for his intellectual capabilities (kishronos), but also for his piety (yiras shomayim) and refined character traits (middos), but was having problems finding a good shidduch. Yaakov was getting older, and a veil of sadness could be discerned beneath his normally happy disposition. Despite his personal problems, Yaakov continued to learn with hasmada.
However, one day he made an exception to attend the bris of his chavrusa’s son in the Beis Medrash of the Gaon, HaRav Yitzchak Hutner, z’tl. After the bris, the attendants crowded around Rav Hutner to greet him and receive a brocha. Rav Hutner nodded to each person in greeting. When Rav Hutner spotted Yaakov, he stared at him with a piercing gaze and whispered to him that Yaakov should meet him in his private office. Yaakov stood by the door of Rav Hutner’s office, wondering what Rav Hutner could possibly wish to speak to him about. A few minutes passed before Rav Hutner appeared and ushered Yaakov into his office. When the door closed, Yaakov suddenly broke down. His emotions from years of internalizing his sorrow and loneliness were released. There was no need to explain – Rav Hutner understood everything, and he spoke:
“It’s possible that once in your life you were mechallel shem Shamayim and due to this, the gates have been closed to you. I have a segulah from our rabannim. If you answer “Amen yehey shmey rabbah” with all your strength, you fulfill the mitzvah of kavod Hashem. This is a tested segulah - if you persist in following it, you’ll soon merit to stand at the chuppah, and if you’ll continue afterwards, you’ll also merit a bris.”
Yaakov thanked Rav Hutner, left the office and returned to yeshivah. On the way, he realized that the advice of a Gadol Hador is not only a segula, but also a psak. When Mincha arrived, Yaakov already began to say “Amen yehey shmey rabba” loudly and with kavanah. A few short weeks later, Yaakov became a chassan and a year later, he was zoche to a son. Rav Hutner was the sandak.
Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi
Halacha of the Week
If you forget to daven Mincha, you may daven Shemone Esrei twice at Maariv. Rav Ephraim Greenblatt says that if you are in the middle of a business deal and you will lose money if you stop to daven, that is considered an “ones,” and you may continue your dealings and daven Shmone Esrei twice at Maariv. Even if you will not lose money and only profit, it is still considered an “ones.” Even if you had the whole afternoon to daven but decided to wait for later and then you found yourself caught up in business, this is still an “ones.”

Bo – The bark was worse than the bite
Shemos 11:7 “law ye’cheyratz kelev l’shono….” “No dog will bark…”
The mashgiach of Ponevitz, Rav Yechezkel Levenstein z’l, used to give mussar vaadim in his house. Groups of students would gather at his house bein hesedarim and would return to the yeshivah in time for the next learning seder. The route from the yeshiva to R’ Yechezkel’s home and back was far. Many of the gentile neighbors owned dogs that roamed outside in the courtyards, and the bochurim used to take a long circuitous route to avoid the courtyards and the barking dogs.
One day, Rav Yechezkel spoke for longer than usual. When he finished and saw the time, he told the bochurim that they should cut through the courtyards in order to be on time to yeshiva. The bochurim admitted that they were frightened of the fierce dogs. Reb Yechezkel told the bochurim that they should not be afraid and that he would stand outside and watch them until they reached the end of the courtyards. He told them that they shouldn’t worry about a thing besides getting to yeshiva on time. The bochurim did as R’ Yechezkel said and went through the courtyards. Glancing back, they saw R’ Yechezkel standing in the doorway of his house gazing toward them. As they walked past the courtyards, each dog lay down quietly and passively on the ground until the bochurim passed. When they reached the yeshiva, the bochurim told their friends the amazing story, until the entire yeshiva heard.
Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Moshe Cohen
Halacha of the Week
What is the status of a hair piece in regards to wearing head tefillin?
Tshuvas HaRashba, based on a Yerushalmi, held that a chatzitza, a separation between the head and the Tefillin shel rosh, was not a problem.
Rav Menashe Klein holds that, at best, this Rashba is b’dieved and even the Rashba conceded that the Rishonim before him disagreed with him. Rashba himself admitted that his opinion is l’halacha and not l’maaseh.
Rav Menashe Klein mentions another possible heter – that the custom to put white powder in the hair (gel?) is only for aesthetic purposes and is therefore not a chatzitza. However, he dismisses this argument, arguing that you cannot compare powder, which disappears, to a hairpiece, which is very thick.
Shloh HaKadosh held that even if you put ashes in your hair for aveilus zecher l’churban, you must wash it off before putting on your tefillin.
Machatzis HaShekel OC 27:4 says that even very long hair is a chatzitza. Although some disagree with this, Rav Menashe Klein holds that certainly when it comes to a hairpiece all would agree that it is a chatzitza. If, after explaining to someone the problem with a hairpiece the person insists on putting tefillin on top of a hairpiece, he should not make a separate bracha on his tefillin shel rosh.
