Bo – Love is Not Blind

Shemos 10:23 “law raw’oo ish es achiv.”

“No one could see one another.”

The following story was passed down by the talmidim of the Vilna Gaon.

One of the students of the Gra became blind as a young man. Despite this handicap he refused to stop learning, and continued to spend all of his days in the beis medrash memorizing the Torah that he had learned before he went blind, and indeed he succeeded in becoming a Torah scholar. In fact the Gra took a personal interest in finding an appropriate match for the young man. The young woman agreed to the shidduch and her father agreed to support them in his home.

The joy of the Gaon was very great on the day of the wedding. It was the time for the bedeken and naturally the Gra was present. Suddenly he turned to the choson and exclaimed:

“How can you marry this woman? Chazal say that it is forbidden for a man to marry a woman before he has seen her!”

At that moment the choson turned towards his kallah, opened his eyes, and he was able to see again!

Shabbat Shalom,

R Cohen

HALACHA OF THE WEEK

Ask all your Jewish-related questions to Rabbi Cohen at asktherabbi@aishla.com.  All questions will be answered and a few will be published in the bulletin each week.

Q: Do you need to have separate table tops for a high chair for fleishik and milchik?

A: No. The food that is served to the child is always less than “yad soledes.” You should wipe off the spills between milk and meat.

*** *** ***

Q: Do I need to keep 6 hours between meat and milk if I am nursing?

A: No. You can reduce the time to 1 hour.

*If you think any of these cases apply to you, please make sure to ask your own question because your particular details may render a different answer*

IMPORTANT

Please note that peep holes and additional locks have been inserted into the doors and a new security policy will soon be operating at Aish.  The only way to gain entry to the main-shul will be through the double wooden doors that lead into the foyer. These doors will be kept locked during services. When you knock on the doors someone will admit you. If you come in the middle of the shemoneh esrei you will have to wait (approximately five minutes) until the "usher" will open the door for you. Please also note that the side doors on the men's side are emergency exits only and should not be used or propped open.  Thank you for your patience and cooperation.
