Terumah – The best cure

Shemos 25:2 “v’yikchu li teruma” “and they will take for me a gift…”

The Jewish community in Lita decided to establish a Jewish hospital, and a meeting was held for this purpose, chaired by the Chofetz Chaim.  Several wealthy men attended the meeting, and each of them pledged significant donations.  One donated a hospital bed and some even donated several beds.  The Chofetz Chaim showed much respect to the wealthy men for using their wealth for such a noble purpose.

At some point several talmidim showed up at the meeting and the Chofetz Chaim also treated them with great respect.  One of the wealthy men was surprised at this and disparagingly commented to the Chofetz Chaim: “So how many beds did these talmidim donate?”

The Chofetz Chaim answered without pausing: “What do you mean? Don’t you know that each one of them gave fifty beds?”

The wealthy man was astounded and asked: “What do you mean that they gave fifty beds?  We only donated ten beds and we have much more money than they have. How could they have given fifty?”

The Chofetz Chaim repeated his answer: “Each one of them gave fifty beds which will not be needed.  Each one learns Torah which is the best protection!  Their Torah learning will save many people from needing to be hospitalized!”

Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Moshe Cohen

Halacha of the Week

There are two psukim that people rely on to do mitzvos under dangerous circumstances. One is "shomer mitzva lo yeida davar ra” – one who performs a mitzva will not come to any harm.  The second is "shomer psayim HaShem," – HaShem watches over the fools.

Rav Menashe Klein explains that in regard to “shomer mitzvah….” you can only rely on this pasuk to keep harm away if the bad thing is related to mazal and not natural cause and effect.  If you are doing something that is inherently dangerous, the fact that you are doing a mitzvah is no guarantee that you will not be harmed.  In regard to the pasuk “Shomer psayim HaShem,” only if everyone acts this way will you have protection.

SECURITY ALERT

In an effort to “harden the target,” we have installed a combination lock on the shul’s front door and thousands of dollars of surveillance equipment, cameras, and security guards.  Every member of shul should know the combination (it is written in simple Hebrew next to the lock!) and the door should be kept closed at all times.

ON GUARD

We all feel very happy and safe on Shabbos thanks to Matcal, our Israeli security patrol, which also advises us on security matters.  However, our Shabbos security budget will be entirely used up after Purim.  We ask that you please contribute toward this fund so that we can continue this very valuable service uninterrupted through Pesach and the summer months.  You may contact Tamar or drop off a check at the Aish office marked “Shabbos Security.”
