Shabbos – It’s a Lock
Shemos 31:16 “…and the Jewish People will keep the Sabbath…”
Rav Baruch Ber Lebowitz, (1866- 1939) the late Rosh HaYeshiva of Kaminetz was visiting the States before World War II. As he was walking to shul on Shabbos morning, he passed by a store that was owned by a Jew, and noticed that the store was closed and the door was locked and bolted. In those days (and even today!) it was a great test for Jews to keep their stores closed on Shabbos, since most of their business was transacted with gentiles on Saturday.
He walked up to the front door and kissed the large padlock that was on the door. The people who were accompanying him were very surprised and asked him about his strange behavior.
He answered them: “This is the sign that HaShem is still our Master and that we, the Jewish people, are still His servants! “
Shabbat Shalom, R’ Moshe Cohen
