Elul

Rav Moshe Chadash once relayed an incident that occurred when he was a bochur eating a meal by a family during Elul in Yerushalayim. While he was in the house, he overheard a conversation between the husband and wife, who were the parents of many children. The wife was complaining to her husband that they had finished all the food in the house, and there was no money to buy more food. She reminded her husband that there were several people who owed them money, and since the situation in the house was becoming dire, she asked him to approach these people and request their money.  The husband answered: "It is Chodesh Elul, and we will soon stand at Yom HaDin. We will request from HaShem that He will grant us a good and blessed year. And with what zechus will we dare to request a good year from HaShem? Surely we have accrued many debts ourselves during the course of the last year. The only advice I have is that we also will not demand from our debtors that they return the money to us, and we will struggle to continue to live with what we have. In turn, maybe HaShem will not demand repayment for our debts.”

Rav Moshe Chadash continued: "These were the husband's words, and I was in awe that his wife listened to his words and agreed with them, despite the fact that she had many small children in the house and had no food left to feed them. These were the Jews of Yerushalayim with their simple emunah!

Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Moshe Cohen

HALACHA OF THE WEEK

Tzitz Eliezer z”l says that one Kaddish can be a zechus for many people and, therefore, he may receive money from more than one person to say Kaddish. He does not have to tell the person hiring him that he is saying it for other people as well.  Similarly, if a person davens in a Shul where only person at a time says Kaddish, a person who is saying Kaddish for both his father and his mother does not say an additional Kaddish because he is saying it for two people since his one Kaddish can go for both his parents.  Rav Moshe Feinstein z”l does not agree with this psak and says that if one receives money from more than one person, he should make sure to say at least one kaddish per day for each person he took money from and write down which kaddish is for which person.
