Re’eh – Tzedaka Protects From Death
Devarim
bless you..”
The following story was told by Reb Yechiel Michoel Gutfarb, a member of
a very prominent family of Balei Chesed in Yerushalayim, in the home of
Rebbetzin Shmuelovitz, the widow of Rav Chaim Shmuelovitz, Rosh
Hayeshiva of Mirrer Yeshiva.
There was a Talmid Chochom who lived in Yerushalayim with a large family
of 14 children. It happened that a few days before Yom Tov a poor widow
woman knocked on his door and asked him if he could spare some chicken
for Yom Tov.
He knew that they had two chickens in the fridge for Yom Tov for his family
but that is all that they had, and that is all that they could afford to buy as
their financial situation was very bad. He tried to explain to the lady standing
before him that he simply could not afford to give her. She begged him and
pleaded that she had nothing at all to eat for Yom Tov. He decided that if this
poor woman was willing to come to his house to beg for food than her
situation was worse than his. He went to his freezer to take out one of the
chickens. As he opened the fridge he was horrified to see that his three-year-old
son was there. He had been playing hide and seek and had been locked inside
the fridge and was almost dead from hypothermia. He immediately called
Hatzolo and they succeeded in reviving the child.
“Tsedaka tatzil memawves” “Charity protects from death."

ADVANCED HALACHIC BULLETIN
Kavana is so critical to Tefilla that you should not speed up to answer Kedusha.
If Kri’as Shema and Brochos take a long time then either:
1) Wait until Chazaras Hashatz before starting Shmonei Esrei or
2) Start Shmonei Esrei and listen quietly to Kedusha in the middle.
3) Start the Brochos of Kri’as Shema before the Tzibbur so that you can start with them at your natural pace.
