Yom Kippur – A day of Chesed

It was Erev Yom Kippur. R’ Yisroel’s community in the town of Salant was gathered in Shul, waiting for R’ Yisroel to come and daven. It began to get late. The Shamash anxiously glanced up at the darkening sky and realized that they would have to daven Kol Nidrei without the Rabbi. The time for Maariv arrived and still the Rabbi had not appeared. People went to look for him, however he was not to be found anywhere. Just as Maariv was about to finish, R’ Yisroel appeared in the doorway of the Shul. He stood there in his Talis and davened alone.

When he had finished, people asked him what had happened. He explained that on his way to Shul he had heard a baby crying. He had knocked on the door but there had been no answer. He had gone inside the house and found a baby, a few months old, crying. He looked down and saw her sister no more than 6 or 7, and a bottle of milk, lying on the floor next to the crib. R’ Yisroel understood that the mother had obviously left the older sister to watch the baby while she slipped out to daven Kol Nidrei, and had given her a bottle in case the baby woke up. The baby had woken up, but the older child had fallen fast asleep. R’ Yisroel picked up the baby, fed her, and put her back to sleep. However when he woke up her sister, she was frightened to be left alone with the baby and so R’ Yisroel stayed with her until her mother returned. R’ Yisroel expressed his great joy at having been able to perform these two acts of kindness on such a holy day!!

JEWISH LAW TIP

Rav Chaim Sonnenfeld held that when Yom Kippur falls on Shabbos, it is is preferable for one to have in mind to fulfill the Torah requirement of Kiddush during davening.

When Yom Kippur falls on Shabbos, women who do not daven Maariv during the rest of the year should make a point of davening Maariv on Shabbos.

Have an easy and meaningful fast and Yom Kippur!
