Vayishlach – Wheels of Fortune

In 1940, shortly after the Nazis had overrun Poland, the Brisker Rav, Rav Yizchok Zeev Soloveitchik, decided that it was too dangerous to remain in Poland and that his family should move to Vilna. They hastily packed their suitcases and prepared to leave. However, they could not find a wagon to take them. Members of the family searched for a wagon with rubber wheels that would enable the family to travel with a modicum of comfort, but there were none to be found.

The family was very disappointed as they boarded an old wagon with wooden wheels, which set off on the long and arduous journey to Vilna. Every bump in the road was bone shattering. As they reached the city gates they noticed that there was a long line of wagons waiting to exit. The wagon driver made enquiries and discovered that the Germans were confiscating every wagon with rubber tires.

The families that were riding in these wagons were being told to get out and were abandoned at the side of the roads with their belongings. The turn of the Brisker Rav’s wagon came.

The German officer took one look at the rickety old wagon and with a dismissive gesture waved them through the border. “Now you see that everything is decreed from HaShem!” commented the Rav.

Shabbat Shalom, R’ Moshe Cohen

JEWISH LAW TIP

If possible, Friday's Mincha should be davened before lighting the Chanukah candles.

There are two reasons for davening Mincha first:

1) The afternoon Tamid sacrifice, which corresponds to our Mincha service, was always brought before lighting the Menorah in the Bais Ha-Mikdash.

2) Davening Mincha after lighting Chanukah candles appears contradictory,

since Mincha "belongs" to Friday, while the Chanukah candles "belong" to

Shabbos.  But if no early Minyan is available, then it is better to light first and daven with a Minyan afterwards.
