Chanukah – The Real Gelt

  One Chanukah a few years before his passing, Rav Yitschok Meir from Gur (known by the name Chidushei HaRim after the book that he authored) was distributing Chanukah gelt to his grandchildren. The Rebbe instructed that his grandchild, Yehudah Aryeh (later to become the Sefas Emes, who was, at that time a young married man learning in the kollel) to come and receive his “gelt.”  When Reb Yehuda Aryeh entered, his grandfather asked him what he wanted for gelt. The young Reb Yehudah Aryeh answered: “What need do I have for gelt?”

   “You are right!” responded the great tzadik. “What you need is a son! So I shall give you a son instead of Chanukah gelt!” A short time after that incident Reb Yehuda Aryeh’s wife conceived. In the early stages of pregnancy there were complications that led to a recommendation by the physicians that she undergo an operation that would have resulted in the loss of the baby. The Chidushei HaRim heard about this and commented,

   “I promised that my grandson will have a boy and with the help of HaShem she will give birth to a healthy boy.”

Later, at the time of the birth there were more serious complications. The mother in law ran to visit with the Chidushei HaRim and burst out crying at her daughter’s plight. The Chidushei HaRim was quite composed and replied: “I shall not pray Shachris until your daughter has delivered!”

A short time later a baby boy was born. He was named Avrohom Mordechai and grew to be the Rebbe of Gur known as the Imrei Emes.

JEWISH LAW TIP

    It is permissible to use the same wicks throughout Chanukah.

Chasam Sofer: Itis preferable to use wicks that had been previously used, because they burn better.

Orchos Chaim: It is a Minhag to change the wicks every night because each night was a new miracle, and as a Zecher to the Beis HaMikdash.

   The Minhag is that girls who have reached Bas Mitsva do not light their own menorah but it is permissible if they make the appropriate Brochos. However (Eidot HaMizrach) Sefardic women are not permitted to light and make Brochos.

rebbetzin heller This shabbos

Rebbetzin Tziporah Heller Shabbaton is joining us this Shabbos.  She will be giving shiurim on the theme of “Chanukah and Personal Rededication” throughout Shabbos day.  There will be a special Melave Malka after Shabbos at Aish. Admission for the Melave Malka shiur will be $10 at the door.

 

Volunteer for Hatzolah

The Gruen Family will be hosting a special Oneg Shabbos for men on Dec 14 at 9 pm with Rabbi Kosman at their home on 1546 S. Crest Dr. R’ Avi Kosman is a modern-day Troubador and serves as Maggid Shiur in the Slabodka Yeshiva.

Mrs. Judith Cohen will be teaching a refresher course on the laws of family purity. There will be four classes beginning Dec 30 at 9:15 am for 45 min. in the Aish lecture room. For married women only.

 

AISH Chanukah Carnival & Hachnosas Sefer Torah

Don’t miss the Chanukah carnival this year with fabulous games, food and prizes!  It will start at noon Dec 9^th and be a fun-filled day for the whole family!  There will be a giant interactive moonbounce, traditional carnival games, and raffle.
