Beshallach – Preparation for Shabbos

Shemos 16:5 “….and on the sixth day you will prepare…”

The first time that Yakov Yitzchok, the renowned Chozeh from Lublin, came to Mezeritch he was a young man and it was Erev Shabbos. He immediately went to the kitchen. He saw the cooks preparing the food for Shabbos. He spoke to one of the cooks:

“I have the custom to help prepare the fish that I am going to eat on Shabbos. I would like to take a piece of fish and salt it.”

The cook had no objection. Some of the Bachurim who were there witnessed this incident and wondered how he was going to be able to recognize the piece of fish that he had salted as it was mixed up with many other pieces.

One of the Bachurim who was standing there was R. Shneur Zalman, the future Baal HaTanya. He took a piece of string and tied it to the fish as a sign, without anyone knowing. At the meal that night R. Zalman saw the fish with a sign. The waiter put it onto the plate of another Bachur who was sitting close to the Chozeh. As he put his hand out to take the fish, his hand froze in mid air and he was unable to move it.

   R. Zalman took the fish and gave it to the Chozeh and from that moment onwards everyone realized that they were in the presence of a future Gadol.

                                                                                                                        Shabbat Shalom, R’ Moshe Cohen

JEWISH LAW TIP

Rav Sheinberg Shlita holds that since today we are accustomed to brush teeth and wash in our bathrooms, they are not considered filthy places, (unless they happen to be filthy!) and therefore we can think, (but not speak) Torah thoughts there.

However, if it is a separate stall it is not permitted to even think thoughts.  Similarly, in a shower it is permissible to think Torah thoughts.
