Pekudei – A Tsadik’s Blessing
Shemos 39:43 “Vayevorech Osem Moshe”
“Moshe blessed them”
In the 1800’s in Volozin, there lived a person by the name of Reb Yitzchok. He was a wealthy business man and supporter of the community. He had no children and traveled a lot in order to conduct his business. Whenever he returned from a business trip he would always bring a gift for his wife.
One day before he set out on his journey his wife requested that instead of bringing her the usual present of jewelry, he should bring a complete Shas (set of Talmud) for the house. In those days a full Shas was both rare and extremely expensive. With great difficulty Reb Yitzchok was able to obtain a complete set of different sized volumes. The family wanted to share their acquisition with the community, and offered to lend to anyone who wished to borrow one volume at a time. Their generosity quickly became known and many people came to borrow and exchange volumes. Since Reb Yitzchok was rarely at home, his wife became the head librarian for the Shas.
It happened that the Shagas Aryeh had to spend time in Volozin and he had occasion to use the Shas. When he came to visit the wife of the merchant she recognized that he was a Talmid Chochom and told him that it was unnecessary for him to come to her home to borrow the Shas. Instead, one of the servants would go every day to the Beis Medrash to find out which volume he would need that day. When the time came for the Shagas Aryeh to leave the city he came to the woman and gave her a Brocho:
“You will give birth to two sons who will brighten the eyes of the Jewish people. One will teach insights into Shas for young people who will gather to hear him, the other will not need Shas because he will know it by heart!”
The couple had two sons; one was Chaim, who built the greatest Yeshiva in Europe; The other son was Zalman who was reputed to have memorized the entire Shas!
Shabbat Shalom, R’ Moshe Cohen
JEWISH LAW TIPS:
Correction: Last weeks Halachos were in regards to Parshas Zachor and NOT Purim.
Reading the megillah by means of a microphone
R. Moshe Feinstein z”l did not permit a microphone to be used for the reading of the megillah, even though he felt there was no validity to the argument advanced that when listening to the Megillah through the medium of a microphone, one does not hear the Megillah directly from the person reciting it. In theory one could argue that since sound travels to the listener’s ear, the listener never hears sound at exactly the same time that it leaves the Ba’al Koreh’s mouth. Therefore, the use of a microphone should not invalidate the reading.
Tzitz Eliezer z”l agreed that one should not use a microphone, however he allowed for its use in B’dievad (post-facto) situations.
R. Shlomo Zalman Auerbach z”l maintained that the sound which emanates from a microphone is only an electronic facsimile of a person’s voice, and therefore, one can never fulfill his obligation through such a method.
