Maos Chittim

One year several community leaders of Radin approached the Chofetz Chaim with a painful problem. They had been unable to gather sufficient maos chittim to provide for Radin’s poor during the holiday of Pesach. The Chofetz Chaim told them to gather everyone in the town square the next day.

The Chofetz Chaim spoke, "My friends, as you know I have lived a long and full life. I will not be with you much longer. I am sure that in olom ha’emes, I will be asked about the citizens of Radin and I do not know what to say. If I say the citizens of Radin are generous, I might be guilty of not telling the truth. If I say that when it came time for them to give maos chittim for Pesach, they did not give sufficiently, I might be speaking lashon hara. Therefore I am turning to you for help. What am I to do?"

As soon as townspeople heard the words of the great rabbi they felt embarrassed. They immediately took up a collection for maos chittim.

Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Moshe Cohen

HALACHA OF THE WEEK

Every adult is obligated to drink four cups of wine on each of the Seder nights.  The cup must hold a revi'is. Estimates range from 3 fl. oz. to 5. 3 fl. oz.

•L'chatchila, the entire cup no matter how large should be drunk.  At least most of the cup must be drunk.  If this cannot be done, l'chatchila an entire revi'is must be drunk. B'dieved one fulfills the mitzvah by drinking most of a revi'is.

•The poskim agree that if possible one should use only wine.  R. Moshe Feinstein and R. Elyashiv only allow wine, even if one dislikes it or it will give him a temporary headache.  The Brisker Rav, Tchebiner Rav, and Chazon Ish used grape juice for the four cups.

•The preferred manner is to drink a revi’is in one swallow.  L'chatchila, one should drink most of the revi'is in one swallow. If this is not possible, he should drink it in two swallows with a minimal pause between them.  If it takes longer than two swallows to drink most of a revi'is, one fulfills the mitzvah only b'dieved. If it takes longer than 3-4 minutes, one does not fulfill the mitzvah even b'dieved.

MAOS CHITTIM -- FEED THE POOR OF JERUSALEM FOR PESACH

Maos chittim donations are being collected for Keren Yehoshua v’Yisrael run by Rabbi Shlomo Kaplan. He only supports families that are in dire straits. 100% of the monies raised go directly to screened families in Jerusalem in the form of food coupons.  There is no overhead.  Here is an idea of how far your donation goes: small family -- $180, medium family -- $360, large family -- $540, and this takes care of all their Passover food needs! There are self addressed envelopes in the back of the shul on the bookcase. You can also learn more and pay at their website: kerenyehoshuavyisroel.com.
