Shlach – The “eyes” have it…

Bamidbar 15:39 …You should not go after your heart or after your eyes.”

A yeshiva bochur once approached the great sage Rav Elya Lopian zt”l,  the author of Lev Eliyahu and the mashgiach (spiritual advisor) of Kfar Chasidim, and asked for permission to attend an upcoming wedding of a relative.

“Do you know for a fact that there will be no mingling of the sexes there?” asked Rav Elya.

The bachur hummed and hawed a little and responded, “Well I am not sure, but my father and mother will be with me, and we shall be sitting at a table separate form the other guests! I am sure that I will not be influenced by what goes on there”

Rav Elya trembled: “Please listen to me carefully,” he continued, “I am over eighty years old. I walk with a cane, and I am blind in one eye and yet even when I cross the street I fear to fall into the trap of following my eyes. What makes you think that you, a bochur of eighteen years with perfect eyesight and strength will not be affected?!”

Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Moshe Cohen

HALACHA OF THE WEEK

There are some poskim who hold that it is forbidden to blow soap bubbles on Shabbos because it resembles creating (nolad).

According to this logic it would not be permitted to blow bubbles with gum on Shabbos.

R. Shlomo Zalman Auerbach: held that one should not prevent young children from blowing bubbles on Shabbos because they (the bubbles!) burst quickly

It is permitted to whistle on Shabbos as it was never included in the gezeira against musical instruments.
