Korach – Free Ride

Bamidbar 16:15 “…law chamor echod mayhem….”

“…not one donkey did I take from them…”

The Chazon Ish once traveled by foot to a neighboring town to render an halachic decision on a slaughtered cow. After he had given his psak, he turned to leave, but before he could set out, the butcher gave instructions for a wagon driver to take him home.  The Chazon Ish protested:

“It states in Parshas Korach that Moshe did not take a donkey from anyone. How is it possible that our greatest and holiest prophet praised himself for not taking a donkey from anyone? What Moshe Rabbeinu must have meant to say was that even when he had been summoned to pasken on a shayla and the parties offered him a ride back home on their donkey, he refused to accept it.”

Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Moshe Cohen

HALACHA OF THE WEEK

L'chatchila, a toilet freshener that colors the water (as opposed to one that merely gives off a fresh scent) should not be used on Shabbos or Yom Tov as it may be prohibited because of coloring. The color gives the water in the bowl a more "hygienic" look, so the coloring of the water is beneficial and hence forbidden on Shabbos. The freshener should be removed from the tank or bowl before the onset of Shabbos or Yom Tov.

If you forgot to remove it or you are a guest in a home and if the unit is inserted near the top of the rim of the tank, then you may flush the toilet. This is permitted because the direct act of flushing will not color the water since the water will become colored until it has risen to the top of the tank; the coloring is merely an indirect result of the flushing, which is permitted under these circumstances.

However, if the unit is in the bottom of the tank or is suspended from the rim of the bowl, then the toilet may not be flushed. Flushing such a toilet will directly color the new water coming in. You should make every effort to remove the disinfectant tablet from inside the tank or the bowl, preferably through "indirect movement." If this is impossible or impractical, and you will be embarrassed to leave the toilet unflushed, you may rely on the view of some poskim who argue that flushing such a toilet is not a violation of coloring and flush the toilet in an unusual way, e.g. by using an elbow or foot.
