Tisha B’Av – Time to “chap a shmeuss” with HaShem

Rav Tzadok HaKohen writes in the Pri Tzadik that the three weeks are a unique opportunity to “chap the Shechina.” Since HaShem's “fate” is intertwined with that of Am Yisroel, during the weeks of Bain HaMitzarim the King has no home. When the King is out of his palace and wandering the country it affords the common folk a unique opportunity to see him and meet him.

The Magid of Mezerich says that this idea can be seen in the words of Eicha 1:3, "Kol rodfeha hiseguha bein hamitzarim." The plain meaning of this pasuk refers to the enemies of Klal Yisroel that pursue us and catch us during these sad days. However, this also refers to anyone who wants to "chap the Shechina." If we truly pursue Him, we can catch Him during this period.

Rav Tzadok adds that there are 22 days in the period beginning on 17 Tammuz and ending on 9 Av. This is the number of the letters in the Aleph Bais with which the Torah was written. Since we violated the Torah, these 22 gloomy days are our opportunity to rectify it.

Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Moshe Cohen

Halachic Bulletin

Washing was originally done by going down to the river to cool off. It was done for pleasure. Washing that is done for hygienic or medical reasons is permitted. An istanis (delicate person) is also permitted to wash during the nine days.

R. Sheinberg says that the climate is different in Eretz Yisroel and the U.S. from that of Europe and therefore he permits showering (for those who need) because of discomfort or for kavod habrios (socially acceptance).

Aruch HaShulchan: From Rosh Chodesh it is forbidden to shower or bathe for pleasure.  If it would otherwise not be possible to clean one’s body without using soap and shampoo or hot water, then it is permissible.

Male children under 13 and females under 12 may take warm showers

Children under 6 may shower or bathe in the usual manner.
