Something to cry about – Nachamu

One night at a very late hour, a knock was heard at the door of Reb Shlomo Zalman Auerbach's home in Sharei Chesed.  He answered the door and there stood a very distraught chasan and kallah. They were ba'alei teshuva and their wedding was only a week away. Some information had recently come to light which revealed that the kallah was not eligible to marry the chasan.

They implored Reb Shlomo Zalman to find a heter to enable them to marry. The posek hador listened, but then made a hopeless gesture with his hands that there was indeed nothing that could be done.

Then he turned to them both and said, "But there is something I can do for you." The chasan and the kallah raised their faces in hope. Rav Shlomo Zalman continued, "I can cry!" The Gaon took all the Torah he learned in his entire lifetime, all the kedusha of his heart, and the tahara of his soul, and burst out in heart-rending weeping.

Within twenty-four hours, the chasan and kallah returned to Reb Shlomo Zalman's house. They informed him that someone had suddenly arrived from Argentina who knew the kallah's family well. He testified that the kallah was not forbidden to marry, and the information they had received previously was false.

Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Moshe Cohen
