Shoftim – The Fire of Havdalah

Devarim 20:1 “When you go to war……do not be afraid….”

The trust in HaShem exhibited by Rav Yosef Yozel Horowitz, the renowned Alter from Navardok, was legendary. It is recorded that one motzei Shabbos, during the turmoil of the Bolshevik revolution in Russia, Rav Yosef Yozel stood ready to make havdolah. Suddenly, gunfire broke out in the streets and a rain of bullets flew everywhere. People in the house screamed and fell to the floor, fearing for their lives. Rav Yosef Yozel calmly waited for the gunfire to cease and then proceeded to make havdolah with the same composure as he always displayed. His voice was unchanged. Not a drop of wine had spilled from his cup.

His disciples looked on in amazement at this remarkable display of trust in HaShem in the face of grave danger

Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Moshe Cohen

HALACHA OF THE WEEK

Although everything is decided by HaShem and we trust that he gives us all that we need, we must still ask for things if we want HaShem to send them. That is why the Chachamim made a brocha in the Shmoneh Esrei for parnassa. Do we have a right to request from HaShem to send it through specific means, or must we just ask him to support us financially and leave it purely to his discretion via which channels He will send it?

Rav Yisroel Yaakov Fisher z”l  held that you may not petition HaShem as to how, or through which opportunity, HaShem should provide you with a livelihood.  Your request should be limited to asking for a comfortable income. This is before you start working on a particular venture.  Once you are already involved in it and this is your hishtadlus, you may daven for its success.
