Ki Setse – A  bird’s nest hairdo

Devorim 22:6 “If a bird’s nest happens to be before you on the way…..”

One day, Rav Ezra Attia, Rosh HaYeshiva of Porat Yosef (1885-1970), was teaching a group of sudents. The shiur focused on the mitzvah of shiluach haken. Rav Ezra cited the gemara in Chulin which questions what procedure to use if one finds a nest on the head of a person. One person commented incredulously: “Why does the Gemara discuss such an implausible scenario?"

Rav Ezra answered firmly: "Whatever is written in the Gemara is kodesh whether we understand it or not." The man remained silent, but it was apparent to the others that he was not satisfied with the explanation.

Suddenly, a talmid entered the room. Rav Ezra greeted him warmly: “Sholom Aleichem! Where have you been?”

The talmid answered: “I was traveling on business to India. I saw strange things there that I've never seen anywhere else. Once, I actually saw a man sitting completely still under a tree with his arms folded. He sat in that position for three days, and on the third day, a bird landed on his head and started to construct a nest in his hair."

Rav Ezra smiled broadly and said: “Moshe emes v'soroso emes."

Shabbat Shalom, Rabbi Moshe Cohen

HALACHA OF THE WEEK

On the second day of Yom Tov we do everything that we do on the first day.  However, Bnei Yisachar held that we eat the simanim only on the first night since the gemara says we eat simanim "in the beginning of the year" and the second night is not the beginning of the year, although it is Rosh HaShana. Terumas HaDeshen held that the entire Aseres Yimei Teshuva is considered the beginning of the year and during this entire period one can eat simanim. The Arizal, Chasam Sofer, and Ben Ish Chai, ate simanim on both nights. Mateh Efrayim says that some have a minhag to eat the simanim even during the daytime meal on Rosh HaShana.
