Erev Yom Kippur
On Erev Yom Kippur after Mincha in Tiferes Yerushalayim, everybody hurried home to eat the seudah hamafsekes and finish preparing for Yom Kippur. The Rosh Yeshivah, Rav Moshe Feinstein, zt"l, however, had other plans. Walking home with his talmid, he suggested that they visit the elderly Rabbi of Boyan. The Rov was bedridden, and Reb Moshe was aware that most people would be too busy to visit him on Erev Yom Kippur. His talmid agreed and they both hastened to reach his house. When they arrived, they found the elderly Rov lying in bed alone and dejected. His face lit up when he saw Rav Moshe and his talmid. They sat down, and Rav Moshe talked to the man at length, without showing the slightest bit of impatience or concern about the passing time. He continued to engage him in discussion until he saw a discernible change in the Rov's mood. Only then did he arise, and wish him a gemar chasimah tovah. Once he was outside, he quickly hurried his steps to reach home in time to eat the seudah hamafsekes.
Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi
HALACHA OF THE WEEK
Birkei Yosef: If you have wronged your friend and you do not ask for mechila (forgiveness), Yom Kippur will not be michaper (atone) even your aveiros that are between you and Hashem.
Mateh Efraim: If you cannot remove hatred against your friend from your heart, your tefilos are not accepted. You should ask mechila in person and not through an intermediary. If you cannot get in touch with your friend you should have in mind that you will contact him as soon as possible after Yom Kippur. Others say this is not necessary.
Rav Yisroel Salanter: You must specify what it is that you did when asking for Mechila, unless telling your friend what you did will cause him more pain. In that case, it is best to ask for mechila without getting into details.
Some say that even if you know your friend was moichel you, you still need to ask mechila because the humility is part of the kapara.
