Wellsprings of Torah – Toldos

Breishis 26:18 “vayoshev Yitzchok vayachpor es be’eros hamayim asher chofru b’yemei Avrohom”

“and Yitzcok returned and dug wells of water which they had dug in the days of Avrohom.”

Rav Yechezkel Avramsky z”l once described what the Ponovitzer Rov, Rav Yosef Kahaneman z”l, had accomplished as a fulfillment of a promise that Chazal made in Tractate Megillah – that the botei medresh and knesses of the Diaspora will be uprooted and replanted in Eretz Yisroel.

The Torah tells us that Yitzchok re-dug the wells of water that had been dug by his father Avrohom and had been filled in by the Plishtim after the death of his father. Yitzchok then gave them the same names as Avrohom had given them.

The Nazis destroyed the wells of water that had existed in Europe. They murdered those who taught and learned Torah and burned and destroyed the buildings. The Ponovitzer Rov miraculously escaped from the devastation and came to Eretz Yisroel where he re-dug the old wells, and renewed the learning and teaching of Torah. He called the yeshivos by their old illustrious names – Ponovitz, Grodno, Slabodka!!

Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Moshe Cohen

Halacha of the Week

Rav Braun in She'arim Metzuyanim B'Halacha cites Sefer HaEshkol that when a man goes to mikveh, a chatzitza (interposition) does not invalidate the Tevila.  He also adds that from the words of the Eishel Avrohom it seems that Negel Vasser (washing in the morning) is not as stringent as Netilas Yadayim for a seudah and the rules of chatzitza do not apply.
