Vayetze

Breishis 28:11 “…vayikach m’avnei hamakom…” “….He took from the stones of that place…”

Breishis 28:11 “…vayikach es ha’even..” “..and he took the stone..”

Rashi: “alai yane’ach rosho” “upon me should this righteous person place his head.” “meyad asa HaKodosh Boruch hu even achas” “Immediately HaShem made them into one stone”

A sofer, who was a chossid of the Gerrer Rabbe, once came and told the Rebbe that he insists on writing tefilllin and mezuzos on klaf (parchment) that not only comes from a kosher animal, which is a requirement in halacha, but that the animal is properly shechted and is not neveila or treifa.

The Rebbe thought for a moment and said to him:

“Perhaps you should do just the opposite of what you are doing. You should only write on parchment from animals that have been declared treif or neveila!”

He then proceded to cite the pasuk and the Rashi from this week’s parsha: “alai yane’ach tsadik es rosho!” “You see’” continued the Gerrer Rebbe, “the entire world seeks to do the ratzon HaBorei (will of HaShem). Kosher animals serve their purpose and get their tikun in the world by being eaten by a Jew, and hopefully by a tsadik. Treifos and neveilos, however, cannot get their tikun this way. But they can get their tikun by being used for a holy purpose such as tefillin or mezuzos!”

Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Moshe Cohen

Halacha of the Week

If a ben Eretz Yisroel leaves Israel before the 7th of Cheshvan, he should insert “vesen tal umatar” in shema koleinu and continue to recite Birkas HaShanim as if it were summertime.

If a ben Eretz Yisroel leaves Israel after the 7th of Cheshvan and has already begun to insert “vesen tal,” he should not change back.  If he is traveling with his family for an extended period of time, he should adopt the custom of the Diaspora community and begin inserting “vesen tal” the 5th of December.

R Moshe Feinstein held that an Israeli should not stop reciting “vesen tal” since he and his family continue to require rain in their homeland. Similarly, the authorities disagree regarding one who travels from the Diaspora to Eretz Yisroel between the 7th of Cheshvan and the 5th of December.

If he intends to stay in Eretz Yisroel he should most certainly pray according to the custom of the land. If he intends to return before the 5th of December, some suggest that he insert “vesen tal” into shema koleinu while others suggest praying in accordance with the custom and needs of Eretz Yisroel.
