Ekev – Did I or didn’t I?….

Devarim 8:10 “and you will eat and be satiated”

The Talmud in the eighth chapter of Brochos states that there is a difference of opinion between the house of Hillel and the house of Shammai regarding one who ate and forgot and did not bentch.  The question is whether he has to return to the place where he had been eating or if he can bentch in the place where he is now.

The question is worded as “one who ate and forgot and did not bentch” as opposed to “one who ate and forgot to bentch.”

Rav Zilberstien explains that it is not possible for a Jew to eat and forget to bentch because a Jew cannot be so lacking in gratitude to HaShem. Therefore we must say that the person forgot that he had eaten and that is why he did not bentch!!

Good Shabbos, Rabbi Moshe Cohen

Halacha of the Week

Mishna Brura 106:4: Women should daven twice a day – Shacharis and Mincha.

Mogen Avrohom: Women only need to say a short tefila once a day.

Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach held that while the minhag haolam is that a woman may daven Shacharis even until midday, it is preferable that she does not do so.  Since she only needs to daven once a day according to the Mogen Avrohom, it is better not to daven during a questionable time, but rather to wait for Mincha and daven then, even though Shacharis is preferable to Mincha.

PARKING AT CHASE

Chase Bank is kind enough to allow us to use their parking lot before they open and after they close.  However, they request that no one park in the three spots in the southwest corner of the parking lot (the three spots closest to the Aish office) at any time.  Please respect this so that we can continue to have the privilege to use the rest of the parking lot.

ON GUARD

Matcal is our Israeli security patrol and also advises us on security matters.  We ask that you please contribute toward this fund so that we can continue this very valuable service uninterrupted through the summer months.  Contact Tamar for details.

MAKE THE MINYAN

It’s vacation time, so the 6 am Shacharis minyan needs some help to ensure that there are enough men for the minyan.  Please join if you can make it.

CHESED OPPORTUNITY

Marla Simmons (Feather), a former member of the Aish community who made aliyah a few years ago and is married to Avrohom Feather (also a former LA-er), needs a van with a wheelchair lift for transporting their 8-yeald foster daughter who has a severe form of spina bifida and spends her time mostly in leg braces and a wheelchair.  Bituach Leumi in Israel will help cover the costs, but they are $8,000 short.  You can do a great chesed for someone you know and make a check out to the Aish Tsedaka Fund (with “Marla Feather” in the memo) and we will make sure that they get the money asap. It is tax deductible.  Contact tamar@aishla.com if you would like to pay by credit card.
