Reb Zushya’s Menorah  - Chanuka

R Moshe Leib Sassover was a student of Reb Shmelke of Nickolsburg, a student of the great Maggid of Mezritch. Once, R Moshe Leib was traveling through the town of Brod. One woman came to ask R Moshe Leib for a blessing for her sick daughter. Weeping, she offered a bag of coins for tzedakah, and told R Moshe Leib that the doctors had given up all hope of her daughter's recovery.  R Moshe Leib looked at her and said: "Take back your money! There is something else I would like: your silver menorah!” The woman was shocked. How did R Moshe Leib know that she had a menorah passed down in her family from her grandfather! She hesitated but decided to give it to the Rebbe. By the time she arrived home, her daughter was already feeling better.

It was Chanuka, and R Moshe Leib's usual menorah was set up. Just before he lit it, R Moshe Leib turned to the Chasidim who were present, and said:

"Is R Yechiel Tzoreif here? Reb Yechiel, come and stand next to me."

After R Moshe Leib lit the menorah, he turned to the shocked R Yechiel & said:

"I am going to tell you a story about your grandfather, whose name was also R Yechiel Tzoreif. Your grandfather was a poor man. When it came time for him to marry off his daughter, he could not pay and had no choice but to borrow money. He started traveling from city to city, collecting a few coins here and there. One day R Yechiel heard about a very rich man who gave a great deal of charity to poor people to marry off their children. He made his way to the man's house, and asked him for help. The rich man asked his name and when he heard that he was Yechiel Tzoreif, the silversmith, he said:

“Oh! I've heard of you! Don't you own a silver menorah which you made from coins that you had from the great tzadik Reb Zusia of Annipoli? If you give me that menorah, I’ll pay for your daughter's wedding,” the rich man said. R Yechiel did not want to give away the menorah, since the coins had been given to him by the holy R Zusia. But the rich man insisted and so, with a broken heart, R Yechiel gave away the menorah, to pay for his daughter's wedding. Some years later, the rich man passed away. When his soul went before the Heavenly Court, many angels came to testify on his behalf, but there was one selfish act causing a problem. He had taken the menorah away from Reb Yechiel, acting callously and thoughtlessly, and breaking the heart of R Yechiel. Despite all his mitzvos, he could not go into Gan Eden.

"This is the menorah that belongs to your family. It was made by your grandfather. Recently the granddaughter of the rich man gave it to me. He deserves his reward in Heaven. This way the menorah returns to you, and the rich man will have his reward, as it should be."
