Gelt- not guilt

Dear Community,

Chanukah is a time in the Jewish year when the custom arose to give gelt (money) to our children. There is a great deal of speculation as to why we do that but one reason undoubtedly was to commemorate our independence from Greek oppression and show our gratitude to HaShem that the beis Hamikdash was back in our hands.

Today we may no longer have the Beis HaMikdash, but we have a mikdash me’at – our shul and our community. Any gelt that you are able to donate to our community is extremely helpful to us to defray our costs that seem to spiral daily like a dreidel and is helpful to you as a tax deductible write off this year and a deferred credit in olom ha’emes!

A lichtige (light filled) Chanukah to all,

Rabbi Moshe Cohen
